For safety's sake, I bike with a helmet, wear a bright colored bike jersey, and often run at night or in the early morning wearing a reflective vest. These things have no other application other than safety. What safety items or practices do you use?

someone always knows exactly where I am headed, and what time I expect to be back. I just listened to the story of Aaron Ralston, a mountaineer who neglected to do that, ended up in an incredibly dangerous accident, and bc no one knew where he was, he ended up amputating his own arm with a jacknife. communicating=muy importante.

ICE on my cell phone.

In Case of Emergency.  First Responders are now tuned into looking on a cell phone under "I" for these numbers.  I have ICE1, 2 and 3.

In Case of Emergency.  The acronym I.C.E.  If you're hurt, and you have a cell phone, a First Responder will look to your cell phone and select "I" from 'contacts' 'find.'  If there is a listing under "I" for ICE they will call that number.  I have three because who knows whose home when.  Safe training!

I use the other good advice here as well as a few other things.

  • I now use www.gmap-pedometer.com to map out my route and leave it up on the monitor at home before going out for a run so anyone can look at it and know where I am.
  • If I'm running at night, in addition to the reflective vest and headlamp, I have a blinking red light on my back.
  • The cell phone comes with me on runs over 6 miles.
