I live in Wisconsin (high of 23F tomorrow) and most of my free time is when it is dark and closer to the low temp for the day (low of 18F tomorrow). I have found spinning classes to be fun and have a book of 1 hr trainer workouts.

My question is, how often should you do a prepared workout or spinning class vs. just putting your caboose in the seat and pedaling?

thanks,
keith

I also live in cold weather (MA), but I love riding outside so I try to do that as much as possible. If the weather is above 20F I'll definitely head out, but if it is below that I use the trainer or do spinning classes. I do at least one ride outside (which it is usually my long ride) through the winter…

The trainer even though it can be incredible booooring it is a great tool for training, I even do 1 trainer session even during the summer. You can focus on improving your pedal efficiency, improve cadence and develop power (Usually your time on the trainer is equal1.25 to 1.5 of time riding on the road) Spinning classes are also good as it helps for motivation, but be careful as some instructors tend to blast the intensity every single session and your HR will be through the roof! If you are doing base training you might want to follow the workout but cut back on the intensity and keep your HR between your training zones (A few instructors might get offended, buy hey your goals are different right?) good luck!

Any amount of time doing either means you spend less time on the cow in your avatar which is only going to help with your endurance base.

I would laugh until I peed myself if I were watching a race and you came down the stretch of the bike leg on that thing!

Nice avatar Cheesehead...err, wait. Can I call you that?
Believe it or not, with proper layers you can ride through the winter, depending on your tolerance for putting on multiple layers, etc. My limit is also about 20 degrees.

If I understand your question correctly, you are wondering if spinning and trainer workouts (on your actual bike) are enough? If that is your question, I believe yes, that will keep you in reasonable shape. If you have the tolerance, try to get out a couple times a month to keep acclimated to outside riding.

I do not believe you need to add a flat "pedaling-only" workout on the trainer, unless you have rollers and are working pedal technique.

Are there other trainer workout guides out there beside Spinervals?  Currently, I don't have a DVD player in front of my trainer, and I'll be experimenting on it for the first time this weekend.

Thanks!

There may be others but I believe spinervals come in VHS. Or, buy a DVD player for $40 bucks and you're all set.

Thanks for the advice.

My trainer workouts are actually printed and I watch TV and try to keep the dog from sticking her nose in my spokes. Sounds like I should get some tights and get my chubby butt outside.

I have one from Chris Carmichael. It's pretty good. Painful when done correctly.

My wife and I saw a DVD player for $29 at Walmart the other day. Were amazed that prices are so low.

He can probably be out in much lower temperatures on that cow.  That thing has got to give off heat like a furnace once it gets moving!

p.s. I don't even want to think about your hydration system!

I don't mean to be a dork, but she probably gives off more heat standing, chewing her cud and ruminating. Nothing better than the cream off the bulk tank in your coffee though.

just a dairy vet's perspective.

now, it is supposed to snow 2 inches today so i am definately going to be on the trainer this afternoon.

have a good weekend.

I'm just a little surprised you didn't mount a set of aero bars to it!

I used to go on night rides during the winter months. Coldest we hit was -10. never did it for training benifit, just for the hell of it. It's kind of strange when you your water bottle freezes solid on you afte 30 min of riding. Bike also starts to make some interesting creaks and groans
