Kalaeloa (Nimitz Beach at the old Barber's Point), Hawaii
United States
DeAxle Sports LLC
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 20m 33s
Overall Rank = 49/76
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 5/7
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30 a.m. Slept much better than the night preceeding my first two triathlons. Had waffles and protein shake and OJ at 5:15am, got to the race by 6am. Still dark till up until almost race time.
Event warmup:

Some leg stretches.
Swim
  • 11m 6s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

all start at once. couldn't get in rythm, inside line to bouys. ran into and struggles with lots of bodies. had to roll over twice for backstroke after second bouy, tried CSS. Hard to exit, 4" waves, standing then couldn't touch bottom, back to swim, had to do this twice.
What would you do differently?:

More open water swimming practice.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Better T1 time by 2" than last 2 Triathlons. Satisfied with T1. Hard to get new shoes and cleats into pedals. Standing start on bike after running it with shoes on out of T1 to road.
What would you do differently?:

Practice the shoes / pedals entry
Bike
  • 40m 41s
  • 13.4 miles
  • 19.76 mile/hr
Comments:

No one passed me on the bike. I made up 8-10 places on the bike. Avg 19.8 mph, min 15-17mph, max 23-24mph.
What would you do differently?:

Log more miles. This was only the third time I've ridden my new Felt S32, just bought it last w/e.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Run
  • 24m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Had some left side pains first mile, felt a little like puke a couple times, still winded from bike segment, then got into a pace, second half felt good, finished last mile okay. Only passed by one runner, I made up maybe 6-8 places on the run.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swells and waves, triangle course, too many bodies in the swim. Not fast enough to get out of the pack. Need work on getting on the bike in the pedals.

Event comments:

During the swim I was thinking why am I doing this.......not looking forward to anymore, but overcame, adjusted attitude, finished fun. Looking forward to next season.

Hey! I was in this race! Were you the guy I was talking to during he awards presentation? Were you the guy with the new Felt bike from IT&B? If so.. COOL! After I walked away I was thinking I should have suggested BT to you! LOL! If you don't remember I was the tallest guy there and we were all checking out the results board and we were in the same age bracket. Wow! Small world! Aloha fellow BTer!

yeap, it's a small world. i was the one with the new felt bike. i've been using BT to log my workouts......has been a great tool. nice to have met you yesterday. my wife and kids have been on the mainland the past two months (mother-in-law cancer....but she's okay now), they're coming back tomorrow, so it's going to be hard to find the time to train. see you at the great aloha run in a couple months.

Naw, the waves weren't tough at all. It was actaully pretty calm as Hawaiian waters go. I don't think the waves had that much of an impact really. But then again, I wasn't trying to win.
