Pre-race routine:

This was strictly for fun, and was just part of a visit to see a friend from one of the other triathlon boards I frequent. But my airplane trip from hell reminded me why I always fly out at least 2 days before a race.

To make a long story short; I was supposed to arrive in Saint Thomas at 4:00 pm, and be on 6:00 PM ferry to Saint John. Instead I was still sitting in Miami at 6:00 PM. I arrived in Saint Thomas at 11:00 PM. I got the airline to get me a room in Saint Thomas, and took the 6:45 AM ferry to Saint John Sunday morning.
Event warmup:

Warm up? For someone coming from 30 degree temps, simply getting out of the car was a warm up. :-) I did swim a little bit to make sure my goggles were okay.

Comments:

This was supposed to be totally for fun. My race season had really ended in October, but as soon as the RD said Go! my competive nature took over. In the first 100 feet I swam right through and over several people, including my friend Jodie. Once I got pat them I was pretty much by myself. There were a couple of people ahead of me that I was trying to chase down. I was closing in, but couldn't quite catch them before the end of the last loop.
Transition 1

Comments:

I had fairly new shoes so I didn't have my Yankz in them yet. I actually had to take time to tie my shoes.
Run
  • 29m 10s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

What can I say? It was 32 degrees when I left NY the day before. It's hard to adapt to a 50 degree change. Also it was hilly. There are not very many flat parts in Saint John.

I actually caught a couple of guys and passed them. It wasn't long though before Jodie and this other woman caught up with me, and left me in the dust. Between the hills and the heat, the run was tough for me. I was very happy to see the finish line. That was one one places where it was actually flat.
What would you do differently?:

Get there a week early to acclimate. :-) This trip was too short!!
Post race
Warm down:

walked around for a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The 3H factor. (Heat, hills, humidity)

Event comments:

This was a fun way to check out the local tri-scene.
