My first triathlon tomorrow and I'm all set to go! 11 hours and counting.....

If anyone else is racing tomorrow, especially if it's your first like me - good luck! I don't really know what to expect but whatever the outcome I'll enjoy it and be better for doing it, so I hope everyone is successful in their own ways.

Wow ! I did it!!!!!  : )

See race report for full detail but briefly, the weather was cr8p and it was cold, windy and rained the entire time. That wouldn't have been too bad except the forecast was sunny & warm (you gotta love the English weather) so I only had thin running tops etc so froze big time on the cycle and that just sapped my energy. The real challenge was the open air pool that was soooooo cold that when I got in my chest tightened so much I could hardly breath. The first 4 lengths I just splashed and tried to breath and hardly made any progress. With a bit of perseverence I got into my rhythm and the last 8 lengths I managed to swim properly. After that the cycle and run were a walk in the park - the run was actually a cross-country mud-run through Woburn park and I nearly got run down by a herd of deer!

Final time was 1hr 32m and my goal was 1hr 30m so I feel pretty good not really knowing what to expect. I know I could have pushed harder on the cycle and run and with some change in kit strategy could probably save 1-2m from my transitions as well.

Lost my virginity and love it so will be back for loads more! How good does that drive home feel when you've completed an event, feel good, wind the stereo up and let loose!

Thanks for all the support from all here. Look forwards to loads more.....

Congrats on finishing your first one -- and on looking forward to lots more. It's exactly as you say, once finished the first you start finding where you could cut a few seconds or minutes, so you must do another!!! Then it happens all over again.

Fun though.

Way to go! You and I had opposite problems. Weather in my hometown normally peaks at 80 and that was the expected temp at the race site... well actually high 80s--BUT!

It was 100+!!!

Really happy for you! So when's the next one??

:-)

Was planning 4th July as this is the 2nd in a 3 race series, but have found another fairly local race on 23 may which I plan to have a go at! This time in an indoor heated pool so should avoid the swim problems I encountered last weekend. Will then have early July, mid Aug and hopefully a last race on 26 Sept but may have to come to California on business that weekend so may not make that one  Tempted to find a late race around San Diego instead if i could get my bike over or hire one?

Oh no! Just checked the race results on the website:

Overall Mens seniors - 42 of 44

Swim - 43 of 44
Cycle - 41 of 44
Run - 33 of 44

To move up a place I have to save 6 mins on the guy ahead of me!!!!!  To get in the top 50% of finishers I'd have to save 20 mins on what I did!!!

Wow, have I got some work to do in the next few weeks. I know I could have pushed harder on all events and the swim was a disaster but......6 mins just to move up one place.....  I'm going to have to find some larger events where more slow people race!!!

Target time time for race 2 is 1'20 and I have about 8 weeks to save that time:

Swim - 11 min
Cycle - 45 min
Run - 24 min

Plan:

1.  Wear a trisuit so no changing/drying needed - save 1 min
2.  No socks - just shoes with elastic laces- save 1 min
3.  Go like hell on the bike esp the flats - save 5 mins
4.  Increase run pace for last 2km - save 3 mins
5.  Push the swim harder - save 1 min

Looks quite achievable when I look at it like that!

Thanks Lara

Do you have any listings for races in SD during the summer? My US office is in Escondido and I get over 2 or 3 times from spring to fall so wondered about finding a race one time in California sun rather than UK rain. Can you recommend any resources and also any good tri shops? I usually stay in Rancho Bernado area and sometimes nearer SD itself so would love to find somewhere to get some new kit and take advantage of the strong £.

Thanks - I know Roadrunner and stayed at the Hilton Mission Bay in March for 2 weeks so would enjoy a tri around there! I was out running around Fiesta Island most mornings so it would be cool to do a tri there as well.

Just found the site for the Mission Bay event and its on the weekend I may be in town - Oct 3rd! I have an event on in SD 27-29th Sept and if I go could probably stay on for a couple of days to do the race and fly home afterwards. Would just have to rent/borrow a bike though.

I'm sure I could post a fast time on a total flat course like that and I guess the water might not be so cold as to need a wetsuit at that time of year - or would it?

Good luck with your first race in June - is it your first ever or first this year?
