I've been going to physical therapy for almost three weeks now, and what started out as some leg pain has uncovered some pretty nasty problems with my back. Granted, as these problems get fixed, amazing new things happen: I can now touch my toes and stretch like a normal human being. However, because I have a very unstable pelvis, I've been told no cardio or jarring movements for at least another 3 weeks. I'm going crazy...my type A personality is sad and angry. I was just getting off the couch, you know? Plus, my trip to Vail will not be much fun when I can't ski, skate, or really even walk. I'm just so bummed.....I need some cheering up please.

Abuse usually voids the manufacturer's warranty

Would swimming be acceptable?

Unfortunately no swimming, either....my shoulder is in the mix.
I am allowed to do some weight training, especially ab work, to help strengthen my pelvis.

Ok, so one way to look at it is you have time to do weights and core work, which I wish I could make time for in my schedule.  Focus on that positive.

Another way to look at it is it could be worse.  You could have been shot in the face by Dick Cheney!

Sorry to hear about your injury. Here is some fuel for your A type personalty!

It is early in season so you can (will) be able to finish strong!
The weight training will only help and you may end the season stronger and faster than before!
Since you now have extra time you can: wash, lube and tune your bike, you can catch up on some important training and nutrition books you've been meaning to read. You can catch up in other areas of your life that may have been neglected to prepare for your busy late season schedule!

Your patience will be rewarded with great form later on, you go!

How is that for A type cheer?

Sounds like you are doing the right thing. Take time to heal, do the therapy and exercises, try to rejoice in the little victories. Things will get better!

Hopefully it is only another three weeks. And hey, when its all over think how much faster you’ll be. With three weeks under your belt you have already noticed dramatic gains in flexibility—just think of it as base training.

Plus, think of how much time you can spend on BT.

Better now than in the middle of the tri-season. You haven't lost out on any registration fees or prepaid travel expenses.

Or you could rent Emmanuel's Gift.

Your avatar scares me. STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT!

All you have to do is replace one addiction with another. Do you like alcohol? Great, everytime you would have gone out there and exercised, you can down a pint of JD. You won't miss the exercise one bit!

Seriously, hang in there and smile. It will get better!

Think of it as mental preparation for the rest of the season. And do like another poster said and read up on all things tri related. Then you can jump on the forum and give the rest of us the cliff notes version . You will get better! Hold on!

as mike said, better now than in the middle of the season. its still VERY early. you can afford to take a break from cardio and still build your base back up. better that than reinjuring yourself. can you do yoga? i find that to be a great way to do SOMETHING, while still being low impact. best of healing to you!

Thanks to all for the advice, suggestions, and laughs. I've already stopped feeling quite so sorry for myself. My husband has now pointed out that we can start exercising together, which is another good thing. He's obese, and just started to be able to do structured walking exercise. According to my PT and his dr's say, we'll be allowed to start running at the same time.

That's cool that you will be on a pace to help your husband.  You know, every time I get injured or something goes exactly the way I did NOT plan, something better comes out of it.

One of those injuries meant finally reentering the gym to lift for the first time since high school.

It is amazing what a little strength training will do for your shape and your mind.  You're on my Other Blogs, so I see you staring at me several times a day.  :-

I have a big 16x20 canvas of that picture in my living room. My husband calls it "the vengeful eye of the Laura." I have noticed the living room being a lot cleaner since we got it. I think its a bit creepy myself, so I hung it behind my chair.

Think long-term and then be productive with your time - do a ton of walking with your husband and on your own, core training, and weights over the next 3 weeks. You won't miss a beat, and you'll be ready in May for your cheering squad in the sprint distance, and way better off than if you blew off the doctor's orders.

BTW - The "vengeful eye" has cracked me up more than once here.
