Subject: Shipping my bike

I've got a race in Illinois in April and I'm debating on how I'm going to get my bike there.  I know I could box it up and check it w/ other luggage or ship it through FedEx or UPS, but I've got 2 problems.

  1. I'm cheap and don't have the $200-$300 to shell out for a bike box right now.
  2. I'm not familiar w/ checking my bike in as luggage or shipping it.

Can someone who's done this before, give me the pros and cons to both options or even possibly list some other options I haven't thought of?

 Thanks!!

Some LBS rent bike boxes.

Also, you can get a cardboard box from your LBS that a NEW bike came in, just pack it very well with plenty of padding. Would take partial dis-assembly and re-assembly at the other end, not rocket surgery but you would have to know what end of a wrench goes where.

Airlines charge $75-$100 each way to transport a bike, versus ~$50 from Fed/UPS. You would need someone on the receiving in of the Fed/UPS shipment.

Don't they have tris in your part of the country?

Thanks Bear - I hadn't thought of renting a box.

As for tris in my area - yeah, there's some great ones.  I live in Colorado, but I've roped my step mom and one of my sisters into doing a tri back home in Illinois, so I figured I oughta join them
