Subject: Gale Bernhardt's Book Question regarding swim workouts
Hey everyone...if you don't have the book, "Triathlon Training Basic" you might or might not be able to answer my question, but I have a question regarding the Swim Workouts on page 102.

Maybe you would know even if you haven't seen the book if this sounds reasonable;

On page 102, the Swim workouts are listed for WORKOUT 1;
Warmup: 200 Swim, 200 Kick, 200 Drill
Main Set: 6-8 x 50 (10 Sec RI between swims).
Cooldown: 200 your choice.

Now, I have been following this program for a few weeks now and was wondering if I was doing it right. I am especially confused about the warmup workout. I perceive it as doing "either/or" not "All" of the workouts. For instance, should I just do a 200 swim and then proceed to my Main Set or should I do all the warmup workouts, i.e., 200 swim then 200 kick then 200 drill??? I am confused and I hope I haven't been cheating myself????

Hopefully, someone can help..

Thanks!

Although I don't have the book I would say that the warmup is all of the parts. To look at it another way you could break up the warmup like this:

Warmup - 200
Drill - 200kick, 200drill

However, if you are still building your fitness and would have trouble doing the whole thing, cutting the workouts short at this point would not be a bad idea. If that is the case, I would cut the 50s (altogether or do fewer) and make sure you get the drill work it. It will pay huge dividends later on.

Good luck,

Shane

Ok, thanks for your help! I just emailed the author and straight from the horse's mouth, yes, I am doing the workout incorrectly...but I am not falling behind...just got to do a little more.

Oh well.

Thanks everyone! Happy training!
