Subject: 35 mile run food

In two weeks I’m running 35 miles self supported, my original plan was to run on our local trail system but the logistics of hiding food every so many miles is a hassle right now due to my busy schedule.

But this morning I decided instead of the trail system I would run the 4 mile loop around my house 9 times. (ok I know 9x4=36… I graduated high school by the skin on my teeth)

This leads me to my question… what sort of food should I place @ the 4 mile mark? I know the standard bananas, grapes, water, Gatorade,…. But what else? Give me something creative that will involve a huge amounts of prep time.

Eric

Snickers Marathon bars are good, fig newtons too (if you can stomach them, many can't).

Candy is a good treat too.

Others on the site that have done ultras will have more suggestions for you.

no prep time....but the best thing I've found for that sort of thing is gel.

9 4 miles loops?  You'll drive yourself bananas

Bananas AND loopy!

Don't forget your salty snacks... pretzels, pickles (sounds weird but our marathon runners love 'em), PB&J quarters are good... some candy is nice for long runs...

and of course, the ever-delicious and nutritious Gu

GU it up! What have you been eating on your training runs prior? Stick with what worked on those. At least doing loops you are never too far away from food or a place to get rid of it.

Hydrate!!!!!!!

PB&J's I forgot about that one..... thanks..... The thing about me is that around 20-23 miles I get soooooo hungry that I contemplate quitting… this year I’m going eat more before the race instead of my standard Cliff bar and water. I need to change

well just eat more silly.  I think 200 cal per hour is the magic number and I've heard that on runs that long, you want to be taking in protein as well.  I don't know if the protein in the peanut butter is enough or not.

I agree toward the end of marathon distance, gu's just aren't enough and I get really hungry.

Do you just deal with it, block it out, think of that big ____ that you will eat after the race, ?

I have to have a hamburger after a race. I crave them so much its scary. I haven't done an ultra yet, but I've eaten marathon bars during marathons and those help.

At my first and so-far only ultra earlier this month, the best thing was boiled red potatoes cut in fourths dipped in a separate container of salt. Also pretzels were good. Fig newtons. Sprite. Coke. Payday candy bars. Gu and electrolyte/carb+protein drink. Lots of water. And a large dose of determination.

Afterwards, I had a hot dog and my recovery drink.

I think it's a great idea to do a loop. My ultra was a 3.3 mi loop course with 2 aid stations. It worked out really well and made it easy for the volunteers. Remember to take some things with you when you head out. A 4-mile stretch is a long way to go during a long run without anything.

Good luck!
Mike

Do you think I should put another aid station in my loop? (fyi: the loop is in a secluded part of the city that rarely gets any traffic)

It's up to you. You'd probably be fine with just what you usually use to carry food/drink with you on your long runs. If you want that "just in case" coverage, if it were me, I'd probably put one of those 2.5 gallon jugs of water and a bag of pretzels out there; maybe some gel, maybe a folding chair.

I'm thinking you may want medical personnel on hand if you're going to go 35 miles.

Make sure you have plenty of hydration, and it probably wouldn't hurt to add some salt tabs (like Endurolytes) as well.

I like trail mix.  You know peanuts, M&MS, raisins, chex mix, kind of thing.  Easy to chew and salty with a mix of carbs and protein.

If you have only one station, something in the middle is a good idea like these guys said. One of my favorite 'treats' during a marathon and long tri's between gu's and aid stations is peppermints and spearmints. The sweet and mint is refreshing without tasting too sugary (important for me over the course of 4-5 hours).

GOOD LUCK!

There is something about doing the self supported stuff (tri's, running, biking, etc...) that just get my blood pumping. I like races but I like proving to myself that I can physical / mentally overcome the miles alone, I guess that’s why I struggle with having a running buddy.

Let’s look at the list shall we:

(Food)
- Extra gallon of water at mile 2
- Peppermint / spearmint gum
- Gummy bears / smarties
- M&M’s
- Trail Mix
- Medical personnel following me at all times (thanks runningfoo… wait!! I’m the runningfoo!!)
- Salt tabs
- Pretzels
- GU (did I tell you all that I’m a GU connoisseur? I like a nicely aged GU)
- Snicker Marathon Bars (had one last night before I went to bed... not bad)
- Pickles (Tr3crappy, I’ve yet to see a runner with Vlasic pickle... but I will go with you)
- PB&J quarters

(Supplies)
- Cell phone (Thanks for the vote of confidence Lara... ?)
- Extra socks
- Lawn chair

Any thoughts on supplies?
