Subject: long run and long bike back to back?
I am starting a new plan for this year, and right now i am doing 3 runs 2 bikes, and 2 swims. Well I like to enjoy the long run and bike so id like to put them both on the weekend to make it to parks instead of runnign the same loop around my place before dark. Is it ok to do a long run on saturday and a long bike on sunday without hurting yourself? I kind of think that since both are more for the aerobic capacity instead of speed, it may be ok. Just looking for feedback from people who have done this stuff for a while! THanks

You mean long ride one day and long run the next?

That is what I currrently am doing as it is the only available time I can do two longer sessions. I (usually) do my longer swim workout on Friday, my long bike on Saturday and my long run on Sunday and then have a rest day on Monday. So far it has worked out for me without getting totally wiped out.

But I'm also getting over being sick this week, so I dropped my long swim today and will either cut back my long ride tomorrow to a short ride or none at all and shorten my long run on Sunday. I need to get over this bug so that I can race next weekend ....

Therein lies the problem. If you are not at the top of your health when you start doing that type of program, it can compound any problems very quickly.

Yeah, just be cautious with the long days back-to-back.  It could lead to increased fatigue and/or injuries.

A lower risk setup is to do the run on Sat and the bike on Sunday, though there are people who like the reverse so they can get used to running on tired legs.  Either way, just make sure you are recovering ok from workout-to-workout.

Been doing it that way for years. Hard to find time for a six-hour ride and/or a three-hour run during the week.

Yup that's what many athletes do (including me) as usually we have more available time during the weekends. There are other aspects that you should be aware and learn to cope with such as: the time it will take to your body to recover from these sessions, the actual time you spend on your long sessions, etc. I also have Monday recovery day and every 4th week I drop my training to have a recovery week.

As most of us 9-5 er's have found doing the long ride and run on the weekends works best. Not only does it fit in my schedule better, but it also gives me a chance to really concentrate on the workout at hand. No need to worry about rushing home, making dinner, finishing up work..I can just ride. I too suggest doing the long ride on Saturday and long run on Sunday, as stated earlier, you can practice running on tired legs. My other suggestion is to do a swim workout on Monday. Although it isn't an actual day off, it is an Active day off and will give your legs a break.

That's a very common training plan, especially for athletes training for longer events where the long run and long ride require 2-3 and 4-6 hours respectively.  There just isn't time during the week for most people with full-time jobs.  I suggest running Saturday and riding Sunday most of the time so that your tired legs take a bit less abuse on the second day but it's good to get at least a couple weekends where you ride then run...that's what you'll be dealing with come race day.

Don't worry about it...the conference sucks.  And no, I didn't have dinner with Mike Ricci and Bobby McGee tonight
