Was out for my first outdoor ride of the season. Headed into straight into a 16+ mph wind (it is the windy city) was only about 10 minutes from the turn around and what would have bee a very fun ride, when my back tire blew. CRAP!!!!!!! This wasn't a planned ride and as such I had not yet gotten a tire kit and ended up having to call for a ride, went straight to the bike shop got the kit, changed the tire but a strom was coming in, so hopefully I will get the bike out for a better 3rd ride. Technicall I took it out for about 5 miles on the day I got it in January but you can imagine how fun that was what with wind and cold.

Does anybody have and idea as to how much various wind speeds will slow down a rider? Its obviously different for different riders but just a rule of thumb or such would be cool.

It will also depend on the bike type.  A road bike verses a mountain bike would be very different.

Are you riding in the drops?  On the horns?  On a aero bar?

I don't know of any data that shows your loss of speed into a headwind, but there probably is some out there. I do know that headwinds suck and are just demoralizing. If I ever get stuck out in a bad headwind I just ignore my speed and judge the ride by HR alone.

I do seem to be more affected by them early in the year when I'm not in as good shape as the summer.

I agree with that.  No matter what, always a head wind!
