Subject: Hit by a car
Ok, so last night I earned my first trip to the emergency room when I got hit by a car, flipped over the bike and car, and passed out entirely. I was not at fault, but I feel sorry for the dude that was, he was pretty shook up apparently. This is no joke ladies and gents. Apparently I walked in to the hospital on my own power, but I don't remember that. I'm now in a sling on my left arm and my whole body hurts. I'm waiting to see a specialist in a few days after the swelling has died down. The EMTs told me that if I didn't have my helmet on, I would be dead.

That said, I BEG all of you to be uber-careful when riding, asnd never forget you helmet, I would be dead or suffering brain damage if it wasn't for the helmet!

I had the same thing happen to me when I was about 17. Hit the hood of a car that was turning, flew over the hood etc. The difference is, I didn't really hurt myself.

I'm very happy to hear you're ok, that's really scary.

The bike seems ok, although I haven't really inspected it too intensely. The front wheel is pretty messed up though. I don't know if I'll be able to get it (the wheel) repaired.

Wow! that sucks

Heal quickly and be real careful with any injuries you might have. Sometimes they take a while to make themselves known.

Get well with a vengence!

At least you have an excuse to by a new helmet and wheel.

Can you tell us any more details on the crash?

Hey Drew -- What's this about wrestling with a car -- Thought we taught you better than that !!!

Seriously though, Good message on the helmet thing, we all need to remember why we wear them.  It's also a good message for us to remember that we need to "RIDE DEFENSIVELY"

From one Utah BT'er to another -- Get better man!  You've got a race in 4 weeks!  (seriously -- get better, and let us know what we can do to help!)

To the others out there.  Drew is one dedicated and great athlete.  Had the priviledge of running a Tri with him last weekend, his first....  And he took home First Place AG hardware!   What a way to put a damper on a great weekend!  So--Everyone!  Ride Safe.   Another accident happened here last Saturday, wherein a cyclist was killed when he was run over by a truck on a road.  We've got to ride carefully!

Drew-- Get Better man!

Man that is scary, I am sure glad you are OK. That is a good lesson on helmets. My mom is a nurse and growing up she threatened us kids with taking us to the emergency room to see the head injuries that come in. I helped her out in a Nursing home that she was the Director of Nursing and saw the aftermath so I NEVER venture out without a helmet.

God Bless and stay safe.

Man, Glad to know you're okay!  Thank goodness for helmets!  Seriously, it's something we all fear, but hope will never happen... Many people who get to find out what it's like don't get to speak about it.  Just glad you were!

I second the recommendation to remember to ride DEFENSIVELY-  There's always too many close calls not to!

Glad you're doing OK.

I saw one instance where my son (5 yr old) was riding his bike, lost control and had his hand handcuffed to the handlebars. He hit the cement face first. I was fully expecting him to get up with a broken and bloddy nose, but he just hopped back on his bike like nothing happened. He did crack the front of his helmet and I'm sure it saved him from a major injury.

Do you remember what happened? Can you tell us how this happened? The more scenarios that we can learn about will help us be better defensive cyclists.

Damn!  Glad to hear you're OK and that the driver was appropriately disturbed by what'd happened.

Two things to add to the list of HELMET and DEFENSIVE biking:

Try to wear hi-vis clothing.  Those day-glo green jackets and jerseys might be hideously ugly (see betyoursilver's avatar) but if it keeps you from getting hit by a car...

Leave the iPod at home when you're biking on roads.  We all need to be able to hear that rouge car approaching and have the time to avert/ditch appropriately.

A speedy recovery to you, Drew and safe riding everyone.

Tom
