1:41:07 28.0 miles 16.75 mph avg
1:48:55 30.0 miles 16.75 mph avg
3:24:29 56.0 miles 16.49 mph avg
3:40:04 60.4 miles 16.37 mph avg

I felt pretty good for most of the ride but the last 10 miles of so kicked my *** and I struggled to keep my average mph from dropping too much. There was no wind today and I enjoy biking w/o the wind much more than riding on windy days.

I realize these times put me at the very back of the pack but I'm gradually making progress.

Now you know you have the endurance, work on the speed.  Good job.

That's really not all that slow for a 60 mile training ride - nice job!

That is a great ride Mike. I don't know your age, but I am a middle aged guy (pushing 45) and I did 30 miles today for the first time. Some day I hope to be like you and complete 60 miles...

Again, great job!!

Looks really good!

I could only hope to do so good for 60 miles, and I am 33 (have been riding 1.5 years).

Trust me, age is nothing... I have plenty of older men and women kick my butt on a daily basis.

Keep on doing 60 mile days and you won't be a fat guy for long.

Now, the middle aged part I can't help you with.

that was a great ride as far I'm concerned

my best was on Friday, just under 24miles in just over 2hours,
a humble achievement along side your 60miler,
but hey, for middle aged fat guys, we both stand tall.

Thanks for the encouragement. It seems to me that endurance comes from pushing the envelop and always going just a little further. When I started training for this HIM my long bike ride was at about 30 miles and my long run was at about 5 miles. This morning I ran 13 miles.

The thing that strikes me is, at the end of my run this morning I was totally spent. I could not even imagine running another 13 miles. How anyone runs 26 miles is beyone me - and I've personally run 3 marathons! But this morning I couldn't see anyone running 26.2 miles. I guess it all has to do with fitness levels and what we decide in our minds that is possible. A few years ago the idea of a HIM was unimaginable but now I see it is doable.

It still amazes me how anyone can do a full IM! Someday I might tackle this but for right now I'll keep my focus on a HIM.

Mike, you mention you are totally spent after your 13 mile run.  Are you fueling and hydrating properly?  Hubby finally won me over on the virtue of drinking enough on the run and taking in carbs (liquid) before and after.  Best stuff we've used is Hammer Nutrition products.  We use Heed on the run mixed with water, and Recoverite (also mixed with water) after the run, or any long training session.   We've skipped recoverite a couple of times and we felt like zombies.  Totally zapped of all energy.   We're in training for our first half (Gulf Coast in May) and will be bumping up training for IM FL in November and I don't think we could get through our long bikes and runs without this stuff!

That's pretty sporty (or gutsy) to be training for your first HIM and also be signed up for an IM! :-) I too am training for my first HIM and a for the same race (GCT in May). I've toyed with the idea of trying to do an IM but the Florida IM is booked up. Probably just as well as I need to get a HIM under my belt before I commit to an IM.

Good luck on your training!

~Mike
