Subject: Tall guys and the aero position

I've done the "tri bike vs. road bike" research. I've searched the forums here and on other sites (yes, the Internet contains other triathlon sites besides BT). I have not come across any info or comments regarding tall guys in the aero position.

I am 6'7" tall (about 240 lbs) and I worry about center of gravity and balance. Since I don't ride in group rides and my bike training is solo, I've decided on a tri bike. Before I take the plunge, I would like some opinions of other tall folks regarding the balance/steering/shifting issues in the aero position.

Thanks in advance!

Not exactly what you are looking for since they are talking about road bikes for a 6'8" guy, but you may be able to PM some of these guys and get some info.  They have probably ridden tri bikes or know people that do.

I'm interested in anything you find.
I'm 6'5" tall, 248 lbs and bike shopping.

Getting a bike that "fits" means that your balance & steering should be as good as anyone else in the aero position.  The challenge may be to find that bike as you won't fall into the "sweet-spot" of most product lines.  A custom bike-maker like Guru may be your best bet, but there are probably a few production bikes that could work for you.  Like anyone else, just make sure you find an LBS where you trust their fitting expertise.

I'm only 6'2" and I'm even having difficulty with the position since most of my height is waist high.

A friend of mine is 6"11" (actually he lives north of Milw. so I'll ask him where he went--I believe it was in the Milw. area) and bought a custom road bike vs. tri last spring. Mainly because he couldn't find anything his size and the LBS's couldn't custom fit anything from stock.

Plus, he does lots of group rides and centuries each year vs. tri's.

Guru is actually one of the ones on my list, although higher on the $$ side.
They do custom frame geometry.

If I have to, I'll get one to be sure it fits right.

Take a look at Yaqui bikes as well.  Custom frames from Scandium tubing and a great price for custom work.  The guy that runs the shop used to be the frame builder for the Russian or Romanian Olympic team before moving here.  You send him your measurements, and he gets you the best possible fit.  This is the route I'm going as soon as I save up the $$$.

You could do some research to find somone who has a good reputation for fitting people to bikes and get some recommendations from him.

I'm 6'8" and have a Motobecane Century Pro road bike with Profile Design Carbon Stryke bars (longer than most I've seen). Balance/center of gravity have never been a problem at all, but it's also not a tri specific bike so take it for what it's worth.
