Subject: How often should you get fitted on tri bike

The FIST-er thread on COJ got me thinking. I bought my Cervelo in Sept of last year and was FIST fitted then, and last week I went to have it dne again because I felt my riding style had become more aggressive.

My question is I wonder how often you should have your riding position checked?

Every time you go to the bathroom. And, yes, you may go now.

That's a good question.

I got my bike re-fit today by a person who has a very good reputation here in Las Vegas. I got the feeling when we were going through it that he is very good at his trade.

This was the first time I had it professional checked since late 2000, when I first got the bike. I was fitted then by one of the top bike coaches in Phonex at that time. fyi I was brand new to bikeing then.

I am much more flexible now than I was then.

Today he raised the seat almost an 1.5" and lowered the handlebars about 6 centimeters and moved the seat quite a bit forward.

I was surprised that there was such a significant change made today. The only real change sinceI bought the bike were the Look Keo Pedals which replaced the traditional look pedals.

One of the things that he said was your flexibility in your lower back/hamstrings will have an effect on how the bike should be set up. What I got out of that was as your flexibility in that area changes so does the optinal bike fit.

I think I will have it checked again, probably a little sooner than  6 yerars.

Good Luck!

Jim

Dear Chris,

GFY. Just because you're a humorless twit who doesn't get the joke doesn't mean it isn't there.

Bear just has to reinforce his curmudgeon reputation some times.  Best just to ignore his misdirected and pathetic attempts at humor.  He's probably still grumpy over LSU losing to UCLA.

Dear Mark,

above advice to Chris goes double for you.

Re: LSU- They had a better season, a better tournament, than every team in the country save two. Why would I possibly be grumpy about that?

In response to the original question, I would suggest getting a fitting either once a year or whenever you make any significant changes.

I did an initital fitting on my new Cannondale last year and then went back a month or so later for some fine-tuning after putting in a couple hundred miles.  At that time my set up was a compromise between riding on the brake hoods versus the aerobars.

I'm going back in two weeks for a Computrainer/VO2 session when we'll probably do some more adjustments.  My riding style had been evolving over the past year.  I spend 90% of my time in my aerobars now and I think I probably need a bit more agressive seat position.
