Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:30, drank a bunch of water, had some breakfast (toast w/peanut butter and jam), loaded up the car and headed out. Had a cup of coffee and some more water on the way to the race. Got to the race in plenty of time, picked up my packet and then sat in my truck rocking out to Metallica for about 15 mintues (it was cold out). Put my wheel back on the bike and went out for a little test ride, then set up my transition area.
Event warmup:

Normal race warmup, 5 minutes of slow running, some light stretching, 5 mintues of Z2 running and some more stretching while waiting in line for the bathroom.
Run
  • 15m 49s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

My plan was to go out fast on the first run. Was using this race to do some experimentation and wanted to see if I could recover on the bike from a fast run. Definately accomplished the fast part (I've never run under eight minute miles before).
What would you do differently?:

At the start line, positioned my self towards the back. Should have aimed more for the middle, had to do quite a bit of manuerving to find some open room to run.
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

So this transition sucked, for the life of me I could not get my helmet buckled. I use toe-cages so I did not need to change shoes. This entire time was buckling my helmet and running to the mount line.
What would you do differently?:

Develop the motor skill necessary to buckle my helmet
Bike
  • 22m 35s
  • 6.5 miles
  • 17.27 mile/hr
Comments:

Fairly good ride. Could have gone faster but I was trying to recover from the run and still have energy from the next run. Got passed by a lot of people.
What would you do differently?:

In retrospect, I could have pushed harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m 20s
Comments:

So this transition went much smoother. Don't think I could have gone much faster.
Run
  • 17m 11s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

My plan for the second run was to try to maintain a 10k effort. I think I came pretty close to that. Re-passed some of the people that passed me on the bike.
Transition 3
  • 11m
Comments:

Another terrible transition, once again I could not get my helmut buckled (seems like such a simple task). In my frustration, I totally forgot to swap out water bottles, so only had about a 1/3 of bottle on the second ride.
What would you do differently?:

Take my gloves off when putting on the helmut. After the race, I realized I never practiced with my gloves on.
Bike
  • 22m 10s
  • 6.5 miles
  • 17.59 mile/hr
Comments:

Not a bad ride, definately need to push harder when I have a tail wind or a beneficial cross wind.
What would you do differently?:

Should have pushed harder.
Transition 4
  • 00m 15s
Comments:

Speed wise, this was a good transition. The gel I had placed outside my backpack walked away, so I didn't take the nutrition that I had planned on for this transition.
What would you do differently?:

Will probably get a jersey with a pocket in it and keep my gels in it from now on.
Run
  • 17m 20s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Tried to get water from a volunteer. The hand off went smooth, but once again my motor skills failed me and I ended up wearing a bunch of the water. (Wouldn't recomend dumping water on yourself when it is 40 degrees out). Started to feel my energy level drop about halfway through the run. Really wanted to push hard on the last run, but just didn't have the energy.
What would you do differently?:

Keep my gel in my pocket, don't forget to swap out water bottles (or add a second cage to the bike).
Post race
Warm down:

Did a little stretching and walked around a bit. Once my hearrate settled down a bit, got some candy, cookies, and bannanas. Started guzzling the water a little later.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

In short, the bike. Inexperience plays a part in it. I have not done enough races to know how fast I can push on the bike. However, I know I could not maintain 20mph on that course which is probably what it would have taken to keep up. Need more time on the bike and more experience racing with it.
