Got new running shoes last week, have done a few 5 milers in them, decided last night to go sockless for a 10 miler :-(

I now have bad blisters on the sides of both heels - they became obvious at about the half way mark of the out and back run, so I eased off but had to remove my shoes about 2 miles from home and walk barefoot the last section - which is when the rain started!

Sometimes its like, "you know training just isn't hard enough - best I do something real stupid to make it truely punishing!"

Guess I'll be up-ing the swim for the next few days.

Why would you want to go sockless anyway?

Cuts down on T1 time.  You don't have to stop and dry your feet so you can get your socks on.  Just grab your bike and helmet and go.  Then when you get back from the bike you just slip on your running shoes and are back out.

Now that you have accomplished the blisters try Band Aid brand blister guard patches.  They are great!  They have some type of medicine in them that when you place it over a blister or hot sport (pre-blister) it creates some sort of watery goo under the bandage to help heal the raw skin and prevent a new blister from forming.

I swear by them. Once you get rid of them try some blister guard socks from Champion C9.  They are another essential for blister prone feet.

Be safe,

Shauna

Hmm.. I would never consider it, it takes 20sec to put socks on and how much are you going to slow down from discomfort and blisters?

What distance do you do this at? Not HIM/IM I hope! Sprint I can see maybe...

Bodyglide. Smear it on your feet, and it will really help prevent blisters. Of course, I also wear socks.

I think we all do stupid things, even though we know tomorrow is going to suck because of the stupid decision we made today.

It took way longer than 20 seconds to put on socks during my first sprint tri.  I put them on after the swim and I was wet.  It is not the easiest thing in the world.  Going sockless would definitely have advantages for short distances.

You slow down none, there is no discomfort or blisters if you train this way. Sockless, shoes on the bike, slap on your helmet and shades and go.

Of course the time savings is going to be more significant during sprints, saving a minute in T1 in a one-hour race may get you a podium spot.

I have decided I'll be using socks in future, regardless of the race length.

I intend on putting baby powder in my socks before the race. I can slip the socks on even if my feet are still a little damp.

I'd agree with Bear here. I always race sockless. You do have to do some SHORT triaining runs prior to racing this way, but your feet get used to it.

I ran steeple chase in college, and in my first race nobody thought to tell me not to wear socks (it was the first time that women competed, so nobody knew, and the steeple coach wasn't there). I ran the entire 3K freezing cold, and with squishy shoes and socks. I haven't raced with socks on since.

You just get used to it, and if your shoes fit properly it can be more comfortable.

I tried sockless my last race (run and bike) . . . and I'm sold . . . for a sprint anyway.
