Subject: Is this a USAT rule violation?
Yesterday in my race, at the bike dismount, I lost a shoe. I was riding to the line, all of my weight on top of the left foot/left shoe. When I stepped off the bike, the heel of the shoe must have hit the pavement and came unclipped. Someone yelled "Hey, you lost your shoe." I stopped to go back and get it, but someone (either a volunteer or spectator) was already grabbing it and pulled it off the course... at this point I decided just to worry about it later. My question is: Does this violate USAT rules, and could a time penalty have been imposed for "abandoned equipment" or "unauthorized assistance?" Clearly, I didn't ask for someone to pick it up, and I think I actually said "No! I'll get it." I wasn't penalized, but am wondering if I could have been.

Actually, I believe that I read somewhere that race officials are allowed to offer assistance. Either way, my guess is that no reasonable official/director would give a time penalty for something like that.

I would think the same, especially since someone else had already grabbed it and gotten it off the course before you even had a chance to go back and get it.

Yes... it is abandament of equipment...

Unless, a volunteer placed it at your bike (i.e., off the course) ...a specator can not help.

The shoe did end up being next to my bike in transition, so I can only assume that a volunteer took it (otherwise, a spectator would not be allowed into the transition area).  So, am I safe to assume it's not technically a violation if a volunteer picked it up?

I dropped my water bottle at my last sprint and an official was witness to everything. Someone (a specator?), was kind enough to pick it up at the edge of the road (it was still in a bad spot). He ran about 5 feet towards me (I was already on my way to pick it up), I said my thanks and went on my way.
I asked the event orgainzer (I know him for a while now), about this afterwards and said not worry about it. The official had told him about it but since I returned to pick it up, he didn't pay any mind to the incident. He was looking for gross negligence (ie. leaving the water bottle behindd) and blatent (sp), violations (ie. passing on the right, drafting, etc.)

I would gather in your situation, you would get the same treatment. You did return for the shoe (but couldn't get it?). In a large, high profile, closely watched event with deep celebrity/elite athletes present, you may find the rules may not be so forgiving.

Technically that is correct... but, that could also be a judgement call by an official and still be considered abandament of equipment. It is better not to leave this kind of decision up to an official... go back and getting it yourself is the best policy to avoid a penalty.

The abandament of equipment is not a rule base on "if it is in the way... or, off the course." Abandament of equipment is simply that...abandament is if you do not return/place the equipment to your transition spot.

"...I can't imagine a race official ever giving a penalty for that sort of thing..."

I can and have seen it happen.
