I have never trained long enough to "bonk". But I am curious as to how it feels like. I heard that you bonk, your legs are so tired, you can't even stand up. And worse, it takes a couple of days to recharge. Is that so? Also, how it feels like when you are about to bonk? Would it be too late to replenish by then?

It's awful.  Words just don't do it justice.  You should try it sometime-  if you don't then it just means you're "close minded"

EDIT: Hey! It's Janelle! Was just wondering about you the other day, you pink galloping llama. How have you been!?

There's a great article about bonking in a current magazine (I forget which one) like Triathlete or something.  I'll check when I get home tonight, unless someone here can help me.  It's about how the brain causes us to bonk before we can cause serious damage to our systems.  Repeat, the theory is that bonking is not a physiological response to stress, but rather our brain causing a physiological event to shut down the system due to the stress.  By using Friel's 'breakthrough performance' training sessions we are training our minds to allow our bodies to push the bonking threshold further back.  He cites studies to support his articles.  Whether you agree with it or not, it's very interesting reading.  He is not claiming that bonking is not real, or that the effects can simply be overcome by being strong willed.  Bonking is a very real event but understanding the causes can help us train to prevent it and deal with it when it begins to happen.

See the gatorade commercial with Chris Legh.  That is extreme bonk.

You have a big disconnect between the mind and the muscles.

like all you can think about, if you can still think, is stopping doing whatever you are doing and curling up right there on the spot to sleep.  It doesn't feel "bad" it just feels like a complete shutdown of all functions is iminent.

I had one "bonking" experience as a teenager during a morning tennis clinic.  I was fine all morning and all of a sudden my vision narrowed as if clouds were closing in, and my legs felt rubbery.  I saw coach hitting the ball back to my direction and I kept thinking to myself: hit that ball or you'll be hit.  I managed to block the ball with the racquet and proceeded to sit down in the middle of the court.  All I wanted to do was to lie down.  Coaches yelled "wake up!" and there was commotion among the kids around me.  Then I was sent out of the court and someone gave me a mixed of Ribena and perrier.  Coach said I was dehydrated.

I've bonked twice and it is miserable! Your legs do not stop shaking and twitching and you feel like you are going to throw up. That said, I learned a lot about pushing and training my body.

yea, it sucks a big one. When I start to hit the wall, I will get light headed and "hazy", then the legs start feeling like they are getting heavier and heavier. The two times I did it, thi happened within 1/4 mile of home, so it hit me full on once I got in my apartment. I almost feel hungover from it and I don't feel better until I force myself to consume calories. Once I have sugar back in the system, The feeling goes away, but the exhaustion stays.

I bonked in one of my first workouts back in January or early Feb. I detailed the feeling in my logs, so you can read it if you want. The problem is, sometimes I bonk while working out, and sometimes I'll just be sitting there watching TV or shooting some hoops in the driveway, when I'll basically get weak, dizzy, and collapse and crave sugar. So for me, it's all about nutrition.

I like that thought process, it explains very clearly the way it feels to me.  It doesn't seem to hurt that much... it basically feels like my legs call it a day before I wanted to.  No matter how much I yell and will them to go faster they ignore me.

It's like pushing on the gas pedal with an RPM govenor when you've already maxed it out... nothing happens.

Back in the day when I would do 80 - 100 mile rides on only like three or four bottles and no solid food ..... I'd bonk often.

Worst was one day I was at about the 85 mile mark or so out of a 92 mile planned ride on my way home. Road was basically perfectly flat, but I could barely pedal anymore. Pulled over on the side of the road and unceremoniously dumped the $4500 bike on the grass and me with it (a la Norman Stadler at Kona last year). Sat there so f-ing tired I couldn't even move (or cry). Luckily a lady with a bike rack pulled over and she gave me a ride 6 miles to my neighborhood.

The part that sucks? She dropped me off at the entrance to the neighborhood which meant I still had a mile to go. Got on the bike and super soft pedaled at about 8 mph to home. Got in the house, laid on the coach (shoes on and all), had my little brother call Domino's and get my checkbook, and had him get it at the door when they delivered and proceeded to eat a whole large pizza. One of the worst rides of my life .........

My experience happened during an early morning master's swim class-the coach was asking me to do a drill, and I just couldn't go faster, felt like I just couldn't take another stroke, muscles heavy, I felt exhausted...but I know exactly why-not enough fuel. Didn't have carbs the night before at dinner, and nothing but water just before. Now I know better!

The only thing that fixes it is food, water/gatorade and a nap. Really, the nap is crucial to getting past it.

When I wrestled in HS, my senior year I was at 119 lbs. for most of the year. Keep in mind, I ran XC and track the rest of the year, so I wasn't like the football players that had put on all sorts of weight. Well, end of the year, I dropped to the next lowest weight class: 112 lbs. There were a couple practices that lasted about 3 hrs. At the end, I laid on the mat in sweats, semi-sobbing. I also had to run off about 2-3 lbs the day of weigh-ins for the county tournament. I had to be held to stand on the scale, I had absolutely no spare liquid in me. It was God-awful, and not anything I really wanted to experience again.

Other than that, I've done events where I mentally sucked up inside myself to get through them. I did a 30k event in Germany, which involved carrying a 40lb backpack the whole time. Yeah, by the end, I was more mentally than physically whipped. I repeated the same lyric to a song for the last 30 minutes; I was holding onto my buddy's ruck strap for the last 5k or so, and barely even realized that I had crossed the finish. Not sure if that qualifies as bonking, but it still wasn't exactly enjoyable. The worst part was, no beer at the end. What a gyp!

It was Shoop. And yes, I did. He carried big logs up and down stairs, too. Alas, I didn't get to sleep with our boarder. Sucks.

I bonked during my last marathon at the 36 km mark. One foot cramped up and my mind said "that's it - stop". I stopped for a few seconds and said to myself walking these last 6 km is gonna take too long - get back to running. I did but went through waves of nausea during those last 6 km.

Is it too late to replenish? The challenge for me was in finding something to replenish with. I made the mistake of running on bottled Gatorade (I mix my own when training longer distances). The bottled stuff was much stronger than my normal mixture so it threw off my stomach.

NOT GOOD is how it feels.  I just about passed out on my living room floor and barely had the energy to lift my hand and turn down the volume on the TV
