Subject: Marathon training question: replacing a long run with an oly distance tri

The training program I'm doing for my first marathon (SanFrancisco 7/30/06) calls for a 12 mile run this weekend.  I will be doing St. Anthony's instead.  Fair trade?

I don't think so. A long run is a long run.

Just do it next week instead and then continue with your schedule, even if it's back to back weeks of long runs.

runnerx - 2006-04-26 8:25 PM I don't think so. A long run is a long run. Just do it next week instead and then continue with your schedule, even if it's back to back weeks of long runs.

The following week is a recovery week (10 mile long run) and then the next week is a 14 miler.  Do you think I should do 12/14 instead of 10/14 for the following 2 weeks?

I'm sure this will be the difference maker in my finish time in July (sarcasm).  Why am I even worrying about this?  Unless I do 2 long runs in one week to make up the difference, which I think would be stupid, we're talking about a difference of 2 miles over 2 weeks---ooooooh!

Thanks for your input, your point about doing the long RUNS is well taken.  You cannot substitute other aerobic activity for the pounding of running if you want you legs/joints to be as ready as your heart/lungs.

I think you'll be fine doing your tri instead of a long run, I did this same thing last year - a long sprint tri for my long run & another weekend I did 14,000 ft Longs Peak hike (16 miles rt) in place of my long run. When it came time for the marathon I was just fine.

Not ideal but it's not going to kill you to skip a workout.  And it's not as if you won't be exercising at all.

If you were due to run a 20 miler (which I think of as more of a "long" run) on your training plan I would say definitely not. A 12 miler is not really a "long" run in my mind, so the trade-off is not as great. But, it is still not a fair trade... a 12 mile run is a 12 mile run. Good luck.

You will be fine to miss the 12 miler, I just would not miss any of the runs of 15 and over.
