Subject: FS 50 and FS 100 What do you all think?

There are two new races this year by FSseries on friday May 18, 2012 there is the FS 100: 2 mile swim, 88 mile bike and 10 mile run. The next day is the FS 50 which is half those distances.

Interesting ideas but personally I would have prefered it if they had made them a regular IM and half IM. To me, standard distances add some kind of legitimacy and you can track your results easier over time. But they do sound kinda neat.

I think they sound ok if your plan is to use them as long bricks for training, as per FSS idea for race. I personally am not thrilled about the breakdown of distances from a racing point of view. Both races are crazy weighted towards cycling. If you think in a regualr HIM you cyclcle 56mi then run 13.1. In the IOS 100 you will cycle 32mi more than a HIM but run 3mi less.  Even in the IOS 50 you are running less than an Olympic tri even though you will ride 20mi further.

So if your are training for an IM I would say go with the IOS 100 to get in a long ride followed by a transition style run at IM pace. The problem with that is that the races are very early in the year to be putting in that type of training unless you are doing Cour de Lane sp? but for those doing IM Florida or Cozumel or Arizona (Doug, Scottie, Jen, Alan) the long training idea does not fit that well.

My $0.02

p.s. I know Scottie, Jen and Alan are not registered for any of those, but we will see.

Its looks to me that the 50 and 100 mile races both take place on Saturday, May 19th.  It is a little confusing since they have it listed as Washington Triathlon Weekend May 18th.

I was disappointed in the beginning because the distances were not standard half and full distances but then I started thinking about using them as training days.  Now, I'm thinking that they would be good distances to do as a relay with my girlfriend.

Kinda like the TriStar 111K and 222K races. 1K swim then 100K (62M) bike and 10K run.  (222K obviously double those distances).

TriStar's theory is that you can do a 'big' race but not beat your body up from the long run.  TriStar's is even more heavily bike loaded.

No doubt! Don't be putting crazy ideas in his head! Wink

This does sound like fun, I also agree it does seem to be a bit early to be a good brick for most IM races, August might be a bit better.

Someone mentioned this might be a good training day for someone doing IM CDA, but I only know a couple of people who have done that race.  I know lots more people who have done Louisville (obviously for logistical reasons) and also quite a few who have done Lake Placid.  The 50 seems short and the 100 seems too long for that time of year for anyone doing the August IM races (Louisville, IM Canada, the new NYC race and the new MT Tremblant IM race in Cananda).  IMO, a single race say 75 miles would be a better fit for that time of year (especially if you have done White Lake two weeks earlier).  Maybe something along the lines of a 3/4 Iron.

I wouldn't do that. It just seems that you all had such a great time in Panama City and I keep seeing things about Ironmask challenges and things about IM Cozumel.

Kinda expensive to do as a brick...$175. You can buy a lot of GU for that! I agree with what Daryn said about the rather strange weightings. Most triathlons are already cycling-heavy and this makes it more so. Sure, as a good training day/brick the distances make sense, but at $175 for the 100 and the timing I worry they won't get too many bites. And I don't think you get much street cred by saying you did a 3/4 ironman ;-)

I honestly do not care about street cred. I am leaning toward doing this as it will give me a long swim with a long bike, followed by a run that will not tear me up too much. My A race is Florida in November. My coach wants me to do an early season Half and this is  a good alternative.

I was actually partly joking about the street cred thing. A lot of people DO care about that though (one of the reasons why IM branded races sell out very fast but non-IM branded races do not??). People like me care about comparability across events/years so that makes these races a bit of a novelty item, which is fine, but it typically doesn't drive huge turnout year after year. Don't get me wrong, I am really glad FSSERIES is being creative and trying to find new options- but I worry about the long-term sustainability of this particular event. Take a look at the NC TTT...cool idea but is keeps getting cancelled due to lack of interest. I suspect a lot of people will look at the distances to this and won't want to commit. I hope I am wrong because I want the FS-guys to do well! What was wrong with a HIM option in the first place? Or was this just a cool little experiment? For me, personally, I doubt I would spend that kind of money on a race with that particular make-up because it doesn't seem to have the "A-race" kind of billing (IMO). I am someone who likes to race hard when I do race and I don't see the point in using a race as a glorified training day (I can easily do that on my own without paying for it!). Just my 2c (actually, 5c because I rambled on!).

RE:  Price.

White Lake Half:  1.2/56/13.1 = $135.00 (before Jan 1)

FS 50:  1/44/5 = $125.00

Doesn't add up to me.

I am also doing IMFL but why so early on the HIM?  30 weeks out doesn't hit until mid april!  I would be way burnt out for IMFL if I got started that early.  I ain't using a coach but I don't have a HIM on my plan until Labor day.

Edit: You talking about the 50 or 100?

I like the idea of doing this as a nice brick workout before something like CdA (price concerns noted!).  However, this is the weekend before Assault on Mt. Mitchell.  That would make for a tough 3 day stretch!

I know the FS 100 is probably better prep for IMCdA, but really, who wants to miss out on the sufferfest that is Mitchell?Wink

FWIW: FSsereis usually offers a significant discount to early entrants. That makes the price a lot more resonable.

According to the website, the early bird pricing is $125 and $175 for the FS50 and FS100, respectively. After May 14 that price increases.

Interesting. I will have to look into that. I did not look at the pricing yet, or notice that those were the discounted prices.

The pricing actually seems reasonable to me. The question in my mind is whether people wouldn't just rather do a traditional HIM or IM and use the money towards that. I guess we'll see how signups go. As part of a weekend with several events, the break-even point in terms of participants for FS might not be that high since they will already be there putting on all sorts of events.

For me the 100 looks good as I am trying to overcome tendonitis issues that affect my running. I have worked hard for the past year to improve my swim. So having a 10 mile run at the end is very attractive to me. There are sprints I like to do in June and I expect to be recovered from the 100 to be able to be competitive in those.

At first I thought the distances were a little odd.  I would much rather do a "true" distance, but I have warmed to the idea of doing the FS100.  I have no plans to do a full until 2013, so this will be a early test run....  Plus I love the area.

The price is a little higher because you will receive a custom Sugoi tri top for signing up for the race instead of a tshirt.

As a RD have you ever thought of having the option of giving racers the option of not getting a shirt and having a reduced entry fee for those people. (not just in this case were you are giving a sugoi tri top, but all races where t-shirts are given)
