Last night while out on my bike training for the triathlon this sunday I had a little accident. The upshot of which is I have 2 (perhaps 3) breaks in my left clavicle. I need to see an orthopaedic specialist before they decide exactly what to do. Until then its painkillers and a sling. No triathlon for me this year. This is pretty darned depressing. Good job I can type with one hand
Best

Ian

I am so sorry Ian!!

But the good thing the accident only broke something that heals. It could have been worse....maybe volunteering for some races this season will help keep your spirits high, or at least keep you in the sport somehow.

Your Triathlon career WAS NOT cut short! Did you only plan on racing one season, and calling that a career?!!

Cheer up!
Wishing you a SPEEDY RECOVERY!

Sorry to hear about your accident.

I like the idea of volunteering at tris. You can think of it as an educational part of training!

I wish you and your clavicle the best.

That is bad news, Is your ride ok?

But as others have said it is hopefully just a delay. And volunteering is a great way to stay involved as well.

Get well soon.

Oh, Ian!

That truly bites...

You have all of my sympathies. Heal well, heal fast.

Maybe we should be bike with more than just helmets. How about the whole shoulder helmet get-up that football players use...

OH NO! I'm so sorry you were hurt.

You've just postponed your training and tri-ing, though, not cut it short. At least, I HOPE that's the case. But taking care of yourself does come first.

Unlucky – at least it was after your trip to blighty!!

Ian - huge bummer.  I had a similar issue last year - had knee surgery and cancelled my marathon and 1st tri.  It is really frustrating to put in so much effort and get nothing back!  So, I understand how you feel.  My suggestion - get on a recumbent bike (once you can tolerate it) and keep your legs strong.  Look for other alternatives that you can do, so you don't get down.  You will be stronger than ever when your next tri date comes along!

I hope you are feeling well and quickly improve!

Ian, how about switching gears a little and training for a marathon or a half marathon?

Tough luck!

Ian, sorry to hear about your accident. That really is disappointing. Don't you just want to turn back time and call "redo!" Take care, and heal well. :-O

All:
Many thanks for your kind words of support and encouragement. With all of you behind me there is no way I can give up on this. I will just have to see what the orthopaedic specialist says on Monday.
But how about this for the ultimate irony (or a sign) on Friday my membership of the British Triathlon association arrived!!!

Sorry to hear about your incident. Heal up quick. I was training for a 1/2 marathon last year when I car crash put me out of service (lower back injury.) I've done some shorter races this year, buthope todothat 1/2 marathon in august.

In short, your TRI career isn't ended....just delayed.

Best a luck.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.  A couple of years ago, I had a wreck and broke my arm and I really went through a time of trying to figure out how to stay in the game.  You will find a way and you can stay connected with BT.  Get well soon.

Ian:

How is it you've decided your "triathlon career" has been cut short? It's a minor setback. You'll heel, then get right back on your feet, and start training again. The positive way of thinking is as the others have said: get yourself out there and volunteer... we need plenty of volunteers! Plus, you're alive, and "fixable." Your bike can be replaced if it's damaged. Endurance and strength is rebuilt.

So, consider this an obstacle in your life. This isn't a career that's affected (unless you're a pro--and even then, it's still not really affected); it's a season that's affected. It's normal to feel a little depressed after such an injury, but as I've said already, it's a minor setback.

I know I sound cold-hearted, but it's a concept that I was raised with and use to this day. Never give up! Never surrender! Always be strong! Life happens.

Cheers! and happy healing!

Ian,

Sorry to hear the news. After a small bit of rest, hopefully you'll be able to take the long view and start planning your comeback.
Hang in there.
