Yes - i have 2, well one of them has now progressed to a more traditional inguinal but the other longer standing one is still of the sports variety. Left side 9 years now, right side, which is now the inguinal, 4 years.

Took ages to get a diagnosis and still waiting to get it sorted due to a number of reasons.

Have you just trained through that?  Do you do anything different?  Has it gotten worse?

yes trained through it - one got worse in that its now an inguinal but other than that no modifications. That said it sometimes hurts a lot and i am sure its responsible for my current knee issues.

the main reason i have not been cut for this yet is due to having the right doctor do it. For me there is only one person i'd let operate on me for this condition and so i am just trying to work it so i see them soon, things are starting to come together so i hope its not too much longer now.

How did surgery go? Can I ask what type of repair method was used? Hope you're back in action soon!

I saw my doctor yesterday.  He did not think it was anything major.  I got the feeling that he was not very up on sports hernias.  Even though he has had two hernias and is a speed skater.  ANYWAY...my question for all of you who have actually had one:  I've taken two weeks off completely.  In the past 5 days I have notices considerable improvement.  I was under the impression that if it really is a sports hernia, it wasn't going to get better.  True or false?  I was going to try and take off some more time and really make sure this thing is behind me before I jump back (slowly) into things.  Thanks again...

In this talk about sports hernia, I did have and had one repaired. It was repaired 6 weeks ago. My question is has anyone ever had recurrent pain after surgery. A brief history of the hernia, it took multiple doctors 18 months to diagnose that it was a hernia. Post op the surgeon informed me it was a small hernia that sat right at the illioinguinal nerve. 2 weeks post op i started feeling the "original pain" that i had prior to the procdure. The next step is a nerve block to see if this is actual a nerve issue. This has since kept me out of work (i have a physical job, heavy lifting).  Has anyone had an issue like this? If so how was it treated and did it work? I was thinking of trying accupuncture also.

After 3+ weeks of rest, I attempted to run again.  Same pain, started immediately.  Doctor recommended PT.  I'm going tomorrow, but hope to move this forward and get it diagnosed if it really is a sports hernia.  I've read countless articles describing sports hernia symptoms...it's as if I could have wrote them.  Word for word.

what country are you based in? IMHO there are very few people in the _world_ who really know how to diagnose and treat a SH. I was in a medical wilderness before i found the right person who diagnosed, what i already knew, in about a minute flat and showed me the exact problem during a dynamic ultrasound.

I'm based in the Northeast US. I'm curious and nervous if this is fact a nerve problem having the original pain 6wks post op. What am i to expect in the near future to either dianose and or treat this?

if you really do have a sports hernia then yes its basically a nerve compression problem due to a weakening of the posterior abdominal wall around or within the inguinal canal. As a general rule the nerves most commonly involed are the ilioinguinal and the genitofemoral and various activities can make the compression better or worse which is why it will wax and wane somewhat. Its not really possible to strengthenen the wall which is why rehab does not really help in the long term. Inserting mesh to fix the problem also does not generally help if its a real SH due to the mesh having an irritating effect on the nerves which are already fired up and so you end up back to square one.

repair the abdominal wall, with a pure tissue repair, and potentially include a neurectomy, depending on how they look during surgery, and you should be good to go.

Thanks Chewy! Mine was infact repaired with mess 6 weeks ago. That would explain why it's gets irritated and painful easier than before the repair.  We are going to try a nerve block to see if this gives relief anf try to get me back on my feet. ANy thought?

nerve blocks to the 2 nerves i mentioned could help, they also could not, it just depends on if the doc manages to hit the nerve. I have had them in the past and they did something but nothing that major so i would not read to much into their results, unless they take the pain completely away that is!

the doc who diagnosed me absolutely does not use mesh in athletes as for a SH it just causes many more problems than it solves, for a regular inguinal then maybe there is a place for it, they dont use mesh for those either, but for a SH no way!

So my doctor sent me to PT.  I went, just to make sure nothing "simple" was being over looked.  I also brought with me a few medical journal articles describing a sports hernia.  I told the doctor I could have written them...that's how well they describe my symptoms.  She agreed, saying there didn't seem to be anything orthopedically she could do.  Back to my doctor on Tuesday...he said he wanted to see me once more before I go see a surgeon.  He asked (again) if I can feel a bulge since my last visit.  So I'm guessing he really doesn't know what a sports hernia is.  I will take in my journal articles and see what he says.  If I do end up heading to surgery...what kind of doctor?  Do I need to see a specialist?  I know there is a guy in Milwaukee who is big in fixing these things...

are you talking about Cattey? Personally he is not on my list of go to people for this that said the no.1 is probably on the wrong side of the pond for you but there are many NFL, NBA and MLS guys that travel to get the right treatment. One example of many

Yes.  Cattey.  Not sure I'm going to have the luxury to travel wherever I want to get this fixed if needed.  It might be my best option.  Any reason in particular you say he would not be on your list?

caveat: i have never met cattey nor meyers who is another big SH guy in the States

To the best of my knowledge neither of these guys treat SH's as an issue that effects nerves which is why i would not go and see them for MY condition as i know it to be nerve compression related. The problem is that SH is a bucket term for perhaps 20 different, but similar, conditions so the treatment really depends on what the issue really is. I know mine to be nerve compression related therefore i'd see the best in the world to treat the condition based on that, yours might be different so make sure you get an accurate diagnosis first before going under the knife as having mesh put in when its not warranted could complicate things further down the line if revision is needed.

Do your research and decide whats best for you but i know whats best for me as i have had a LONG time to work out whats wrong with me.

OK...so I read a few articles by the guy you are talking about.  Impressive.  I'm going to see a surgeon on Jan 12th and go from there.  I've been reading bad things about mesh repairs.  My doctor made it sound like that would be the procedure he would likely want to do.  I'm a little apprehensive, but need to keep reading and learning.
