Hey Fellow Montanans,

What races are you all doing this season? I just registered for Spring Meadow here in Helena! I'm a little scared since it's 10 weeks away and I'm pretty out of shape! Oh well....

Hi, fellow MT'ans! I just discovered this website in a search for info on doing my first tri. I want to do the Griz tri in Mar/April. Have any of you done it? Any great advice for me on my first attempt? I have 6 months to train, all of which will be needed just to learn how to swim!

Speaking of swimming, my 'training log" suggestes "swim golf". What the heck is that??????

I plan on doing the Griz Tri as well. It'll be my first. I hear it fills up fast. I think it's limited to 400 entries? I just got done reading Triathlon 101 by Mora and it was a great book. It had a lot of help in there about all aspects of the sport. Good read.

I have never heard of swim golf, but if you find out, let me know!

I emailed about the Griz, and you can't register for it yet. He said to check back this winter. I checked out your log and you are kicking butt training. Good job! How did you set you short term/long term goals? you have already met you swim goal! The rest will come. What is the part of hte tri you are most worried about?

Ahh.. cool. I will keep checking through the winter.

To change your short term/long term goals, you go into control panel and then "Edit your Training Settings".

Let me tell you, before I stared swimming, 50 yds was a challenge and the fear of drowning was somewhat overwhelming.. I am not too fast, but I can make it now.

I suppose I am most worried about the swimming and the transitions. I have been reading about transitions and doing some brick workout (just bike to run) to see how it feels, but I am am a little nervous about it.

What about you?

Hey there.. I found this about the swim golf.

Then 'swim golf' = 6 x 50 on 15" rest & count strokes. What combination of time and strokes gives you the lowest ‘score?’ (Ex: 43 strokes + 45” = 88).

hope it helps!

I am definatley most worried about the swimming. I know what you mean about the fear of drowing - everyday I swim I give the lifeguards a run for their money - their not sure if I just suck or if I need saving! I'm so new, I haven't even starting thinking about transitions. Wow do I have a ways to go?

Hey - thanks for the swim golf thing!

You know where I swim there are no lifeguards. I don't know if that is a good thing or not. My only saving grace is that it's only about 4 ft deep. I bet it won't be long before you swim like a fish.

Good luck!

thanks for the vote of confidence! I just figured out how long 1000 yards is. I think I liked not knowing...now I am even more intimidated. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

You know.. I was VERY intimidated by the distance (and they say it's supposed to be short). But I started doing just drills like 10 x 50 or 5 x 100, etc. concentrating on form, breathing, etc etc (which makes me flail at times) and it really helped when I would do longer swims. Now, if I could just get rid of my headaches.. I am hoping it's just that my goggles are too tight. Going to try that tomorrow.

You know the headaches are better since I loosened my goggles up. I am a little hesitant to loosen them more because I am afraid they might leak. I was kind of thinking maybe it was my cap, but then I thought.. maybe I am thinking too much

It's also possible that my breathing might have somethign to do with it. Sometimes when I feel as if I am laboring too much, I seem to get more headaches. However, when I find a rhythm, they seem to be better.

Have you had headaches before?

That all sounds reasonable. I have talked to a few swimmers and they are pretty specific about their goggles. Maybe a different pair would help? I would also totally buy the labored breathing part. If you figure you get hypoxic, even for brief periods, that can certainly cause a HA.

I have been pretty lucky, no HA's. But I am soo with you on the labored breathing part. I have to tell myself to slow down, quit fighting the water, quit panicing, and then it improves. But my times don't! Oh well, it will come. I will take it week by week.

You know that's a good idea. This is my second pair. It's a pair of TYR goggles. They seem to fit well, but maybe I should try another.

You are lucky you haven't had any headaches. I haven't been so impressed with them.

As for times, I was really concerned about it, but then I read this thing about how swimming is all about efficiency. It said that if you can become more efficient, then even if your times aren't faster, you won't be as tired for the bike and the run. I liked that.. it made me feel a little better.

That is reassuring. I was just reading some of the coach stuff, and it basically said the same thing - a guy was asking how to improve speed. The coach kept saying work on perfecting your stoke and speed will come. He also said not to be a nazi about how many strokes you should take before breathing - but to breathe based on your oxygen need. I liked having permission to breathe more frequently, even if it is every other stoke, if I feel my lungs are going to explode. I am actually starting to enjoy swimming! I dreaded the swim work outs in the beginning. Now I am looking forward to them. The best part - swimming doesn't hurt. My legs, my knees feel great after swimming no matter how tired I am. Wish I could say the same about running!

I am with you there. As long as I get enough sleep ( I usually go at 5:30 am), I really enjoy the swim workouts too. They are still hard, but you are right, they don't hurt.. and that is good.

Has anyone done the Sea Fair triathlon in Seattle? It's in July. It looks like it's in conjunction with their celebration. It looked like a lot of fun, but didn't know if anyone else had done it.

Thanks! I tried a few weeks ago to go to that site, and I don't know if there was something wrong with Google, but every which way I attempted to get there it gave me a porn site! Crazy!

I'll try again right now.

How is training going? I've been pretty darn lazy the last few months - I have not been doing a lot of specific training - more skiing, cross training, kick boxing, yoga etc. I'm starting to get more focused now tho - I think I have to!

Training is going alright. I have been injury free which has been great. I have been working on an indoor trainer with my bike. It's really hard for me. I like watching TV though and it helps pass the time.

I admire your cross training. I have gone snowboarding with my daughter a few times and mountain biking with a friend, but otherwise, it's just been the gym.

I started a new training program through these guys. We'll see. It calls for a lot of swimming to build endurance and so hopefully I will not drown

Good luck with your training. I am glad you are going to compete. I almost had my wife convinced, but I am not so sure she is going to do it now.

Hi,  I just got back to this site last week, so just joining the discussion.  It is great to have a Montana thread!!!  I am just planning on doing 2 sprint tris this year.  The Summer Soltice here in Kalispell and the one up in Whitefish in Aug.  I scaled back because of lack of funds and how high gas prices are.  I also had to give up my summit membership so I could pay off some bills and am lacking a place to swim right now.  Thus why I am not doing any early season Tris.  It sucks because I love swimming and had high hopes to do the Griz Tri,  even though I am a Bobcat and doing anything with the name Griz in it gives me heart burn Ha Ha.  But I will do it next year!

Have fun training!

Well.. I did it. I competed in the Grizzly Triathlon. It was amazing! I loved it all. The environment, the people, the race, everything. It was just fantastic. I did ok in the swim (17:50) and alright in the bike (~41:00), but then there was the run. I think I had gotten a little dehydrated and got terrible leg cramps. Ohhh.. that hurt. I still finished, but wow.. I will adjust my nutrition the next time around

I am so glad for this forum and all the support from everyone here. I just wanted to share my experience. I would have written a race report, but the race wasn't listed. Maybe I will add it in.

Cool,  good job on the grizzly.

I am signed up for the Summer Solstice tri here in Kalispell.  I am also going to do the bike leg of an adventure race in Whitefish and then I will do the Whitefish tri in Aug.  I am kind of out of shape so I am glad my first tri of the season has only a 600 yd swim.  I didn't  keep up my training like I should of this winter, but my muscles seem to remember what to do.
