TriMan25 - 2012-04-02 1:51 AM Did my first non triathlon race of the year it was Ruckus Kansas City that 4 mile obstacle race and man was it tough but I finished it in 1:09,7 Yes I know it was slow but it a 4 mile run with about 20 military grade obstacles in it and my role was to get through it all and finish which I did. Ill put a pic up here for you all. Next role race is the Oz (Olathe) Half Marathon. That is April 21st. Then it will  be Tri season. Are we staying in this mentor page or moving the page to the spring one?

Congrats!  Those races look crazy!!  I'll stick to sweat vs. mud

Jaelin, you are one awesome racer! You should go pro. Although I know nothing about that. Sorry. But you are a winner.

Marcia, I am with you on the obstacle course mud things. I would have loved that when I was younger, anything with mud and climbing or sloshing through dirty water. But now I will leave that up to those who are not broken like me. Brandon, bet that was right up  your alley with the military type obstacles.

I also want to know- are we all going to stay friends? Do we stay in touch on this page? Sob, I really like you guys. Cry

First race of the year for me yesterday. Duathlon 5K run, 18 mile bike, 5K run. Had a good race, placed 1st in my age group. Run 1= 6:40/mi, Bike = 20.97 mph, Run 2= 7:01/mi. My wife took 1st in her age group also and my son took 3rd in the open 5K and my daughter took 1st in the open 5K in their age groups. It was a great day, except for the fact I hurt my right calf. Kind of weird, it kills me when I walk, but can run on it fine.

Wow, Roger! A great race for you and your family. So cool to have this a family thing.Congrats!

I have an injury like that in my knee right now, can run and bike great. But hurts to walk or sudden movements and esp. squatting.

Hope yours heals soon.

I have increased my mileage in running without trouble but not too many bricks yet. Feeling good about everything else.

Cheers!

Hey gang! What's been happening?

I've been offline for a while, but I have been training. My logs are sort of up to date. I'm tapering for my final race of the year this week.

The swim is on the same sort of course as the Sydney 2000 Olympics was - at least swimming in the harbour and riding over the world famous bridge!

The ITU race is on the same day too.

I'm looking forward to finishing off the season, hopefully under 2:35 for this Olympic distance. There's a few hills on the bike which aren't too steep, but there looks to be a quite steep hill on the run (2 laps). I'll know more when I see it on Saturday.

Keep working hard everyone.

I am at almost the same point Brandon and thinking about the same thing. I know you are supposed to taper but that's all I know. Thanks for the heads up about the fiber, Simone. Might not have thought about that. I am soooo excited about my tri. Can't wait to get into the ocean, ocean breeze (hope it is just a breeze, last year it was downright windy but got better during the day.) The locals were there cheering and spraying us with hoses, can't wait.

I found out my wave starts at 7:56, much better than 9:30 like last year. My bike is messed up so have to take it tomorrow. Hope they don't keep it long.

Best to everyone.

My diet is the biggest thing I watch before a big race, during my tapper.  I stack on good carbs (lots of greens) building through the week.  No simple sugars and limit wine intake ;o).  The day before I load more simple carbs like breads, potato, pasta, and/or rice.  But only in small amounts throughout the day, no "big carb meal" before bed.  I also drank 128 oz of Gatorade the day prior to my last HM (yes, I stayed near a bathroom all day).  All this to cap out fat and glucose levels for race day.  In doing this I have found my race goes better and, probably most important, my recovery!!  Like night and day...

I have formulas to help calculate calorie building based on weight, age, ect. during a tapper week that seem to be right on if anyone wants to go through that much work.  But really, you know how your eating.

You can get a load of info from the following book, it's short and easy to read.

Nutrition Periodization for Endurance Athletes, Bob Seebohar, MS, RD, CSCS

Keep anything you do short and easy, but is important you do something. Many people make the mistake of making a taper a do nothing week. Just keep your legs toned, maybe an easy 3 mile jog one day, a walk in the evening, or an easy swim. It is important to stay off your legs as much as you can the day before the race, then get up early the day of the race, stretch and a good warm up. No matter how much you work out during taper week, you won't make any fitness gains for your upcoming race, so it is important to recover.

I'm still using BT and checking the boards but I think everyone got  busy when Spring hit.  Finished my first Tri of 2012 Sunday, getting back in the groove.
