Animal innards are pretty popular in these parts.

I've got a hankering for a McRib right now, but I'm not sure what my plan for working it off is later.

Taking the hamburger for example, it is considered and indulgent food .... high in fat and carbs, which someone who barely moves will have it stored mainly as fat. But here is the problem with fast food - the use many harmful synthetic chemicals to mimic flavors and make the product last longer on the shelf. Moral of the story - learn to cook! Its faster than you think (takes me 10 minutes to prep a meal) - and my own cooked food will taste better , the way I want it

I love fast food.  I've lost 90 pounds eating the stuff daily.  It's about the choices you make while you're there.  Not saying it's all the purist, most wholesome option, but It's so very common for those hating on the Golden Arches to make even worse choices.  The biggest one I see is shorting one's self on protein, and ignoring the glycemic index and the consequences of an 80% carb diet  (especially true for non-athletes).   For the record, my doc wishes his LDL and HDL levels were as awesome as mine.

Our choices most certainly do reflect upon and impact others within this society.

It bothers me that we can "afford" to feed a $3 "value" meal to a family that is struggling to find adequate shelter, work, and real food. It bothers me enough to the point that I refuse to support the economic system that contributes to the pervasive falsehood that they're providing "food" to fill a need.

All the while the corporate fast food industry is destroying our landscapes by feeding big-farm cattle government subsidized corn ...

And "hiring" a disposable work force at a less than sustainable wage, refusing to give them enough hours that would require those same workers be provided with adequate health care.

I'd rather we, as a society, subsidize local organic farmers that can truly put food on the table for ALL who need it.

This has been oversimplified ... but I don't want to be part of the problem that perpetuates any of our social inequities ... certainly not those that pertain to feeding those that are currently hungry with quality and nutritious food.

That's the source of my hate.

I agree with you and it is part of the reason I do make the choices I make.

My statement was not that our choices don't matter, but simply that just because I choose to buy from farmers I know or raise my own food or forgo all fast food doesn't mean that people who don't make the same choices should take offense.  I don't do this to make anyone else feel bad.  I do it for me and my own beliefs because I do feel that one person can make a difference.  If other people are ok with their choices, then good for them.  My point is that if people find what I do to be a threat, then they may want to re-examine what it is that they do!

This opinion comes from my experience in my day to day life...not necessarily from what has been said here, by the way.

But, they can't.  Not unless our society is substantially smaller.  Of course, if we eliminiate health care, that task becomes easier to manage.

The above is over-simplified.  And I try hard not to hate.

then post your numbers here.  Obviously dropping weight ldl will go down... but the ratios can be crap still. the interesting number is vLDL  which is total chol - (hdl + ldl)  .. it should be very low - under 10

My thoughts?

It comes down to HOW OFTEN you do such things. Once in a while? It's not going to pile on a bunch of fat or give you a heart attack.

This.

Some people eat fast food MANY times a week. I know a guy in my office who does McDonald's at least twice a week. Once a week... maybe... it should be more like once a month.

With that said I have my fast food indulgences... Sonic and Taco Bueno. Neither of which I frequent often. Maybe once a month... IF that.

Of course, it helps my willpower that I'm a vegetarian and I can't find anything to eat on most fast food menus.

I'd rather get rid of big agri than health care. I don't know the numbers if we were to compare the two. But my preference is also based on the belief that we'd have less need for health care if we had less (none) big agri.

And I used the word hate, but it's probably a bit strong. I really am much more a lover than a hater.

We "need" health care in order to live longer.  Without health care, we (as a group) die younger.  But, if we live longer, the population grows and we need more food.  That's where "big agri" comes in.  Without them, we need less health care because we can't feed as many people.  You can't come close to feeding everybody without them.  You may not like some of the products they turn up in (and the choice there is easy--don't buy them), but get rid of them and we have other problems.

There may be a reasoned argument that a smaller population would be better--that we are putting too much strain on our planet as our population and economies grow.  But, seeing as I'd likley be closing in on the end of my life span under that scenario (and facing the high liklihood that at least one of my 3 kids wouldn't make it to their 10th birthday), I have to admit that I hope there are other ways...

bryancd - 2011-12-19 10:35 AM I'm sure you can find a somewhat healthy option at any fast food franchise but it really is simply a question of choice. Thefre are certainly better choices someone can make with a modicum of effort.

That pretty much sums it up, IMO.  I didn't read the other thread, but I often hear people make the 'convenience' argument for a lot of poor food choices ('poor' compared to what they could be choosing).  I don't buy it.  How hard is it to walk into a grocery store and purchase an apple?  (Question not directed towards anybody in particular...)

....but I'd still be pretty hungry after eating an apple.

Well, you know, they have those little motorized carts now.  So really you just have to make it to the front door.

....and considering that the only time I ever eat fast food is when I'm in a hurry and have to eat in my car and for whatever reason haven't packed enough food to eat that day (I'm in the car a lot for work), I would not, under those circumstances, have the time to hit up opposite ends of the grocery store, nor would I have time to eat all that in one sitting, nor would I be able to eat the yogurt while driving.

I mainly dumped fast food because it made me sick. I'm not talking about a place you can get a quick sandwich or salad, I mean the hamburgers, fries, shakes, and other goop from the typical fast food giants.

I would guess the main reason it makes me feel bad is there is just too much grease and salt in the food (not to mention the mystery ingredients you have to research to find out exactly WHAT is in that stuff)

I managed to lose 40+ lbs with my new lifestyle of eating better and doing triathlons for sport. I want to keep it that way, so I tag fast food as one of the reasons that kept me fat, and feeling bad. If you eat it in moderation, I'm sure it won't do much to you.

Surely it depends on how you make it, for example a simple hamburger can be nutritious if you have good quality, lowfat meat and it's broiled or cooked to drain the excess fat, with whole grain bread, ample quantities of vegetables (onion, tomatoes, lettuce, etc), low fat cheese optional ! and baked fresh potato fries lightly salted..then you have something worth eating. aside from those that shun bread and red meat, a hamburger can be a good meal, prepared properly.

However, when it's full of mystery components ("restructured meat products", fillers, binders, flavor enhancers, preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, etc), with loads of fat, and loads of salt, lacking vegetables, then it becomes a lard meal that's quite unhealthy. That's where I have an issue with typical fast food.

Haven't checked the stats for Indonesia, but the relative portion sizes are MUCH smaller here (and cheaper) and the beef is locally sourced and processed, so I'm guessing it's also *slightly* better for you here. I don't think we even have half the "non-beef" type ingredients here that are found in U.S. McDonald's beef.

Hmm, I did just discover something quite interesting. On the occasion that I do hit up BK for a quick fix, I get a veggie burger, thinking it's the healthiest option. And then I looked up the nutrition info:

BK Veggie (hold the mayo):

Guess I've just changed my BK go-to hunger fix!
