Silverback - are you planning to be in the slayer group 2013 (assuming there is one?). It'd be great to stay in touch an actually meet at the Outlaw 1/2! Best make it the beginning though as you'll likely be long gone by the time I finish Laughing

Slayer wanted to ask you what you think of online coaching from someone out of town, I know you are coaching and would like to know how much more of a benefit it would be to be coached by someone in town. I'm currently weighing my options of getting a coach or not and how much that coaching could impact my performances. Anyone else with some comments feel free to chime in as well.

As far as couching;

I had a private swim instructor several years ago and it really shortened my learning curve to improve my swim. She would meet with me for an hour a week and actually get in the pool and pace me. I knocked 45" off my 100 time and was down to consistent 1'25" 100s by swimming 4 days a week and and following her plan. Unfortunately I was too beaten up to run or bike. I then had a good looking coach my wife hired to help me get ready for an IM. I doubt I would have finished without the extra help.

I have not done the on-line approach other than the pre-made ones here on BT. I think on-line would work if you don't have any technique flaws and don't need the company of a coach. The pre-made plans are fine if you don't hit a glitch in your training but if you tweak your ankle one day and the plan tells you to run long or hard the next, you need to have enough sense to back-off

Online coaching is what I have been coached by more or less for 5 years.  I did hire on site swim coaches here and there as thats the big issue/limiter for me.

I like the structure/accountability/sports psychology element of coaching. online coaching is fine from both the coach and athlete side. the key is good communication on both sides especially on the front end as the goals are clarified and the structure of weekly training and the annual training plan/racing schedule emerge. daily input and give and take are key too.

all told, i see no reason it won't be effective online and I have had major breakthroughs with online coaching. my athletes are doing well too so i think its nothing to fear. just make sure you get your money's worth and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the info. I would like to find a local coach if possible however pricing is key? I appreciate the input and will let you know in the coming months.

Slayer, are you planning to mentor again or does it conflict with you coaching? Would love to join in again!

Hey Kate

Thanks for your interest. I have been slammed with coaching but that's not a complaint or a conflict. I was just overwhelmed with athletes interested right from the get go. So, I am leaning towards just mentoring through this thread again. I suppose we can invite others here too.

I know its not on the fresh new board but we all have history together and know where to find each other. How about it, everyone? Or do you think we should open it up on the fresh mentor thread board?

I'm in for whatever you do, Slayer.  Probably won't be a big tri year for me, but I'm sure I'll still be biking and running and maybe racing a little.  In any case, I can still offer advice and shed some light on weight training and nutrition and stuff, too.

Really love this group!  Very excited to see you all hit some big milestones this season.

I'm cool with whatever we do, I just really value the support of this team! In terms on holidays I'm taking a well earned rest with my family? I plan to use the time to plan my training for the year as well as catching up on some good training on technical skills. Swim today and tomorrow as well as some off road bike handling with my brother. Should be fun!

Unbelievable power numbers. Great work. Nothing a little A+D ointment won't fix.

Guys! I had been struggling getting back on the wagon after a short introduction to runners knee. Finally just getting back into to the groove. HAVE to keep this going with Leadman 125!

In short - badly! My husband left me and finally moved out at the end of Jan, I've been redoing the house and trying to patch together my life and what I'm doing ever since and needless to say my focus was totally lost. I think it's just something that I needed to do so I'm trying not to get too down about it. I am 'sort of' still on track for my 1/2 mara in a couple of weeks but really, really concerned about the prospects of the 1/2 IM in June. You guys have done this kind of thing before, do you think I'll be OK with 3 months prep?

Sorry to hear about your knee my man and the life stuff Kate. Tough stuff. Racing to finish with a smile? I would say you can press forward and make a call later if things don't fall into place. Your swim is probably not far off, same with your run, so bike endurance becomes crucial and brick runs too. Doable is my vote. Keep us posted and get to work! Ps Alcatraz this weekend was nuts. I give it v high ratings.
