Subject: Where to buy 'athletic fit' clothing

Where are people buying their athletic fit or slim fit clothing? I have a hard time finding it, except at the more trendy clothing stores. This is more true for casual clothing.

So far, I've found:

American Eagle for athletic fit T's and henley's

Gap for slim fit button-downs

Banana Republic for slim fit button-downs

Buckle for slim fit T's (talk about trendy!)

I feel a little odd as a 41 yo shopping in some of these places, but most other places have 'traditional fit' or 'full fit' clothing. Sizing down isn't usually an option because the shirts are too tight on my shoulders. When they fit my shoulders, I have two shirts worth of fabric around my waist.

Besides, fitted clothing almost always looks better.

Patagonia has slim fit clothes.  For casual stuff, it's mainly t-shirts.

Jos A Bank has great tailored fit shirts. Far less 'blousy' than the normal fit shirts. They also have mix & match suits so you can get a jacket & pants separately, and in the right size.

This is a great question, I have found athletic fit T's at Target, everything from plain to all kinds of printed ones.

If anyone can add where to find stuff that is also for taller people, that would help too.  At 6'3" and relatively thin, I struggle to find shirts that are long enough that aren't also 2 sizes too wide!

I buy all my stuff at Calvin Klein outlets they have slim and extreme slim fit dress shirts. Casual where I usually find at Pac sun or Ross but then again I am 25 and still feel okay walking into those stores. Good post though.

For casual I wear just regular tshirts.  For work, I wear Jos A Bank dress shirts.  They have a sale right after christmas that you can get some shirts for $25-$30.  I buy 7-8 at that time.

I am far too cheap to pay $40 for a dress shirt that I am going to ruin long before I get $40 out of the shirt. so I avoid their other sales they seem to have daily.

For men, Nordstrom's carries slim or tailored fit shirts with their brand.  They also carry Hugo Boss shirts that fit very nice.  Hugo Boss suits also have a more athletic fit.  I buy these at Nordstrom's or Nordstrom's Rack.  You get the Nordstrom service at the main store obviously.  Go to the men's section and get a  sales guy in the suit section to help you.  Tell him what you want and they will make you look good.

I used to buy Banana Republic shirts but they just don't last or hold up well.  I found them cheap especially for the price.

All my athletic stuff I buy at REI due to their lifetime guarantee on anything they sell.

L.L.Bean has trim fit sizes and good prices - also has one of the best warranty/return policies in the business.  FWIW, its also the unofficial uniform source for New Englanders (or those that wish they could be!).

x2.  The 1MX Slim fit is the most slim cut dress shirt I've ever worn.

Express and BR is where I shop for dressier items, but for casual polos and button ups, I shop in the kids section.

Believe it or not, I wear an 18-20 in boys, which is smaller than a Polo brand polo shirt in small. I have never seen an adult mens XS. The button downs work as well. I wear my shirts "fitted", but not skin tight. Most mens smalls are quite huge, medium sized easily, if not borderline large.

The prices are cheaper for boys clothes too!

If anyone can add where to find stuff that is also for taller people, that would help too.  At 6'3" and relatively thin, I struggle to find shirts that are long enough that aren't also 2 sizes too wide!

My husband is tall and skinny, and he likes the sizing of Gap Tall Mediums. They fit right in the shoulders, and the sleeves and body length are long enough to fit him, without looking boxy in the torso.

Thanks for this suggestion.  I stopped by Express today for the first time in a decade and picked up a couple of these.  They fit like a rock star!  Also ended up grabbing a couple pair of their pants since they seemed to be one of very few places I found stocking 30/32 slacks.

Great post. I think everyone has given you the details. I know that I have found slim fit in some of the store brands as mentioned.

Thank you!  I haven't been in a Gap in ages, going to have to check them out.

Dunno. I do know that Cabela's carries a good selection of "Lard Butt" size that fits me, though

That's interesting because I'm a Boss (Red, Black, Hugo, you name it) wh*re and I'm sick of how their dress shirts fit.  Even their slim/athletic cuts are too blousy.  Now their pants and suits are definitely another story although I've become a bigger fan of Versace lately because I think their cut is even better.

Could all be size too though.  I'm 6'1" and 172lbs.
