Subject: Flat problems on my training rear wheel

A while back I picked up a Forte Titan Rear wheel (http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1034379_-1___)

I also just picked up the Training tire made by Vittoria and put in a new tube.

Pumped the tire up last night and went to switch it to the bike for a trainer session tonight and bam.. flat tire.  Not sure what the issue is since I checked the whole wheel for anything poking, and made sure there was no pinch flat.  This isn't the first time this has happened and I'm getting tired of running through tubes.

would rim tape help with this issue?  Am I using the wrong tire/tube for the wheel that I have? I'm currently using a 700x19-26 tube, and the tire is 700x23c tire.

Thanks for your help, since this is getting frustrating.

The first thing I thought of was rim tape as you were describing it.  Sounds like the tube should fit, and if it's not pinching then rim tape would be the logical next place to look.  You might have a spoke poking through.

I am no expert, but I thought that rim tape should always be used.  If you don't have any rim tape in there, I believe that is definitely causing your flat.

ETA: http://www.landrys.com/resources/LandrysTechTips/default.aspx  I did a quick google search and found several sources that talk about rim tape.  Here is one.  Scroll down to about mid page and he talks about it.

I thought the same thing. Is there some type of plastic strip in there instead? I've seen that on occasion.

Rim tape should always be used on spoked wheels.  (assuming clinchers).  I don't use it on my HED3 or aerospokes because they are composit/carbon wheels with no spokes.

Also, I now only use CLOTH rim tape.  I tried to use some cheaper plastic tape once.  I was descending a long hill, brakes got the rims hot, the plastic tape got soft, and the pressure from the tubes pushed through them at the spoke hole.  The rear wheel on the trainer could get it warm enough to do that, perhaps.

If I get a rash of flats with no apparent reason (nothing sharp in the tire or cut sidewall or holes or burrs in the rim) I will replace my rim tape.  It sometimes gets a bit loose/stretched and somehow does something to the tube to cut/puncture.

Make sure it's the right size of rim tape as well.

I once got a good deal on a set of FP-60's because of a pinch flat problem with the rear wheel.

Turned out the rimtape was simply too narrow for the profile of rim, causing some play, and a place for the tube to occasionally get through.

Rimtape should be tight, and not let ANYTHING get near those holes!

Good luck!

I personally love the FORTE brand on the performancebike.com website (or similar).  It's also slightly adhesive, so it won't slide around.

There is a nylon version on nashbar.com that will also work well.  However, it does have some sharper edges that if it gets stretched out after a while may cut a tube in my experience.  You can easily fix this by also going over it with a bit of electrical tape in a pinch.

You never said where the hole in the tube was. If you mark the tire where the stem is and then inspect the tube you could line up the whole in the tube with where on the tire and the wheel it occured.  That should lead you to the culprit.

At least in my indoor trainer the tire can get pretty hot.  As the pressure goes up if I have had a slight amount of tube under the bead of the tire that blows the tube.  I've punctured tubes while mounting them.  I've put the stem in at a slight angle and had it tear after it was inflated.  I've had retained pieces of wire in the tube that I could barely see puncture the tube.  The list goes on.

Also make sure that the tire isn't getting overly depressed by the trainer.  That could be putting a squeeze on it.

Just a few thoughts.

Good luck.

This is crazy.  I just got this same Titan wheel and Vittoria trainer tire and the same new tube and set them up last night--same thing, a flat!  I haven't taken the tube out to examine it yet, but I will do that next.  I do have rim tape in there but didn't check it carefully.

Another thing to look at for where the puncture is. If it's near the valve every time the valve hole might be too big. I had that on one rear wheel that I had to get replaced.

If it's around the valve, put a piece of 1/2" Johnson and Johnson waterproof medical tape so it's 3"-4" on both sides of the hole and then poke a hole in the middle of the valve hole. Wiggle the valve in (only need to do that the first time) and it'll keep the tube from getting cut on the side of the valve hole.

Exactly.  I thought it would be a heat issue, but it has never been on the trainer.  I usually get the wheel ready and then it flats.

Thanks I think the hole for the valve stem is a little too big.  A majority of the holes are around the valve stem so that might be the issues.  I'm going to pick up some tape this weekend and try that out.

Is it a Schraeder valve drilled hole with preta valve tube? That would be a problem. You can do it to get you home sometimes, but I think Daniel's idea of taping the valve hole to reduce friction against the valve is a great suggestion.

Just checked the tire tonight and it was right near the valve stem.  I think the rim tape will help.  I noticed some small sharp points near the spoke holes.  I'll also try the tip with the tape around the stem hole.

Thanks for all that have recommended the changes.

Just wanted to update everyone.  I picked up Rim tape this weekend and it seems to have worked thus far.

When putting a new tube in the tire it would flat roughly in 24 hours.  Its been about 48 and still going.  Haven't put the tire on the trainer yet but will try that Thursday.

Thanks again.

Yup, that's what mine sounded like when it was flatting near the valve.
