Total Time = 1h 43m 19s
Overall Rank = 74/113
Age Group = athena
Age Group Rank = 4/5
Pre-race routine:

Not sleep much at all. I never can before races. Get up before 6, get dressed. Try different shorts. Settled on the Danskin running shorts. The tri shorts felt too loose in the waist... would create more drag. Ate a Luna bar, banana, hard-boiled egg, and tea. Got organized. R & I rode our bikes ~1 mile to the race area (we were camping near there). Got our packets, timing chips and marking. Went to set up our transition areas. This was R's first race, so there was a lot of discussion and reorganizing over the transition. Then we scoped the lake.
Event warmup:

Got acclimated to the water. Not bad! I was really not cold after the first 60 s or so. Then we prayed. Then I decided I needed to hydrate, so I downed a bottle of free aquafina. We did no stretching.
Swim
  • 19m 10s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

I'm actually really disappointed with my swim time. I should be able to do this swim in 17 minutes. Problems: asthma kicked in right away, I got some mouthfuls and lungfuls of water, and my form went completely out the window. I think I was freaked out enough by trying to see the buoys that I was losing time sighting, and my breathing was bad too. (sighting and asthma) I finally talked myself into swimming better on the second half. But when I went to get out I immediately got a cramp in my left calf.
What would you do differently?:

I think I've neglected open-water training. I haven't been in a long time. I think that would help prepare me mentally so that I wouldn't lose my form as soon as something went wrong. The other thing I think I might try is waiting a bit at the beginning-let all the frantic, sprinting-in-a-big-bunch people get off first. I didn't want to because I thought I should be at the front of the pack. But that clearly wasn't the case, so I should probably avoid some of the frantic-ness instead.
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

Extra time taken to stretch calf. Didn't bother me the rest of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Nada. Could probably shave some time off with more practice.
Bike
  • 47m 37s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 15.66 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went very well. I rocked the hills, and didn't use my small chain ring as much as I thought. I think my pace is v. good considering how hilly it was. Managed to down my whole bottle of gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

I should practice hills. So much of my riding here is flat.
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Fine.
What would you do differently?:

Nada. Well, I could also use some hills practice.
Run
  • 32m 1s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Holy cow I ROCKED this run! I have not seen a below-11 min/mile pace since I was in junior high. I was just hoping for a below 12 min/mile pace. In past races my tri pace has been about a minute slower than my running-only pace, and I recently did a 10k with an 11:20 pace. So this is fabulous. I guess building that running base has really paid off.
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, eat oranges and oreos.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

mental and physical issues with the swim.

Event comments:

So I made all my goals for this race. I didn't freeze on the swim, my bike pace was > 16 mph (goal was >15 mph), and my run pace was 10:20, when my goal was sub-12 min/mile. Only disappointment was the swim time. Oh, and my overall time was 1:43:19, when my goal was <1:49.
