when I get to work at 6am. about 730 I go to the cafe and get about 3 cups of oatmeal everyday. I put some granola and little bit of brown sugar in it.  I do this everyday. is this okay to eat all the time. or is this one of the reason that my spare tire just won't go away?   look forward to the some suggestions.

thanks

Oatmeal is ok to have every day but my god, 3 cups?  The 3 cups might be the issue.  Plus granola, depending on how much your putting on.  The granola itself is ok but it can be high in calories.

Out of curiosity for perspective on the portion size, how much do you weight? I eat about 1- 1.5 cups of oatmeal and honestly past that point I really would feel sick. What does the rest of your day look like as far as eating goes?

If oatmeal isn't okay every day for breakfast, then I am in serious trouble.Tongue out It's the only breakfast cereal I can afford here (runaway inflation on imported food items; local options don't fill me up; price seems low for oatmeal due to low demand) and also just one of my favorite things for breakfast, esp. after an AM workout. Three cups does seem like a lot though, and sugar and granola could be adding a lot of empty calories. You might try cutting the sugar or granola down, and substituting some dried fruit or nuts, which will fill you up more and also give you the joy of "decorating" your oatmeal.

yeah no worries. I'm 6'3 221.   pretty much don't eat until lunch which i will have a spinach salad with some turkey chuncks, shredded carrots, 1 small ladle of itallian. ( becuase I don't like cream dressings).  I will have 2 full hard boiled eggs and 1 cup of cottage cheese.    dinner usually varies to what ever my wife cooks. last night was spaghetti.

x2 the serving size on the oats I use is 1/2 cup.

I think oats are generally a great choice, but, everything in moderation.

well to be honest I think that is one problem I have is moderation when it comes to eating. I used to love buffets. still do but I told myself at the beginning of the new year there will be no buffets in my future.    I will keep eating the oat meal just maybe not so much everyday.

It would be a lot for me but I am kinda tiny so that doesn't count, but it kind of depends on what you are about to do, what else you eat through the day, etc etc.  That doesn't account for the granola and brown sugar as well.  Also, it makes a wild assumption that you are measuring the 3 cups correctly

When I make steel cut oats at home the serving size for dry is 1/4 cup.  It says it makes 1 cup, but looking at it and I even measured it out once and it was just over 1/2 cup.  But anyway I use add-ins like fruit, peanut butter, honey, nuts...not all at once.  On my long run days I eat the oatmeal with one sqaure of dark chocolate and a tbls. of natural peanut butter.  I call it my Reeces Cup oatmeal.  Very rich and I am quite full afterward.  And I eat oatmeal about 3x/week, but change up what I put in it.  If you cut back on the oatmeal serving size a bit, you could add a hardboiled egg to the breakfast.  But maybe not eat as many eggs later in the day.  It will certainly stay with you till lunch.

Nearly every morning I measure out one serving or (1/2 cup) of Quaker Oatmeal for breakfast, which is only about 40 grams.  If I have a long training session on the agenda I might add a little extra to my bowl, but I'm not sure I'd be able to consume more than 50 grams at one sitting without feeling sick.  I typically put cinnamon and honey on top, or sometimes I substitute maple syrup.   In addition, I eat 3 scrambled egg whites.

Make sure you are getting protein especially in the morning. Mix in some organic whey powder (not GNC stuff) and some healthy fats. Your Oatmeal and granola is good but it is nothing but carbs. Moreover, you may want to think about going gluten free on the oats since it will reduce the heavy feeling in your gut.

To the OP, I do not see any problem with the quantity of oatmeal you are eating.  You are much larger framed person than I am, and I have 1 cup of dry oats (whichs comes out to about 2 cups prepared) every morning (the exception being days of big a.m. workouts where I just have a powerbar and fuel as the workout goes) , plus "add-ons".  I am 5'9", 155 and I do not see any issue with having a large breakfast, it is my foundation for the rest of the day.  On light days or days off I may switch it up to eggs with toast and fruit.  If big bowls of oatmeal are what you enjoy, then continue to enjoy!

Typical bowl:

1 cup dry oats, 300 cal

1 tbsp natural PB, 95 cal

1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 35 cal

1/4 cup granola, 85 cal

1 Tbsp pure tupelo honey, 60 cal

1/2 tbsp ground flax, 15 cal

plus a cup or 3 of coffee

Total calories: ~600 calories

It is very filling, and it keeps me satisfied from 5:30a-9:30a.  I would not recommend a bowl this large prior to exercise, but it is a wonderful post workout meal.

thanks everyone I guess this really just a trial and error thing.   so do I tried something different.

3 eggs scrabbled with 1/3 cup cubed turkey chunks. 1/2 cup spinach and 1/4 cup mushrooms.   1 bagel with peanut butter.

needless to say I have a lot to learn when it comes to nutrition and make it work for you.

Huh??

Nutritional make up of the oats I eat:

1/2 cup serving:
Calories: 160
Carbs: 27g (68%)
Fat: 2.5g (14%)
Protein: 7g (17%)

Gluten free oats will not reduce a "heavy feeling" - it simply means they were processed in a way to eliminate the traces of wheat found in traditionally-manufactured oats.

I eat oatmeal 6 days a week, but like others have said, I think your problem is the serving size and maybe also the nutritional value of that oatmeal.

This is what I eat: 1/2 cup dry old fashioned oats (so, not the instant or quick kind) with a 1 TBSP of PB and some fruit - like a banana or blueberries or peaches. So, no added sugar. Once I mix in the hot water, I'm not sure what that 1/2 cup turns into, but it can't more than double.

I suspect that if you are eating oatmeal from a cafe it is not the old fashioned kind and might be the instant kind, and then have less fiber. If you are looking to cut back, I would suggest that you instead sweeten your oats with fruit instead of sugar.
