My name is Ernest and I am in the beginning stages of triathlon training. I am currently 312 pounds but have been on a clean diet and fitness program program for 3 months. I have lost 63 pounds and feel great! I have always dreamed of doing a triathlon but had iven up. With my new found fitness I am taking the long journey to fulfill my life's dream.

Because of my weight, I am not able to run yet but am doing long brisk walks. I have also gotten back in the pool (was a Varsity swimmer in high school, 18 years ago) and have just started using a bike machine until I can purchase an adequate triathlon bike. My goal is to participate in a triathlon they hold near my home in April 2007. I have 11 months and am hoping this is enough time to build the endurance to go through this sprint triathlon. My main concern is obviously the running but my priority is weight loss so if I have to push back to another triathlong, I will. It's no longer a matter of if, but when.

I would really appreciate as much support as y'all can give. I have started a blog so people can track my training (http://beginner-triathlon-training.blogspot.com/). I really need any advice on how to get ready. I am just reading as much on the sport as possible and getting te research done to understand the sport as I slowly build the endurance.

Thank you all so much in helping this big guy accomplish his dreams!

Thanks... Ernest

Way to go. There's tons of us (no pun intended, well, yeah) out there. I still hate to run, am over 200 lbs, but have done 7 triathlons including a Half Ironman and the New York City Marathon. It's about the fitness. Keep that in mind. And don't worry about where you place. Remember, you get the most cheers at the back of the back.
Good luck!

Hi Ernest!

Way to go on the weight loss and the change that you are making in your lifestyle!!  Don't worry about the running that will come.  I did my first 2 sprint tri's last year, I weighed over 300 pounds, and I walked the runs.  There are alot of us here in your same situation.  It's a great place for support and learning.  Have fun and enjoy your journy to health!!

Welcome to Beginner Triathlete.  Congratulations on loosed 63 lbs so far.  As I believe has been mentioned, many here aspire to loose weight.  I am sure you will find much information here that will help you to continue to loose the weight, as well as helping you to prepare for your first triathlon, when ever that might take place.

Welcome, Ernest! Congrats on your weight loss and good luck in your triathlon endeavors.

We do have a couple of big ol' boys down here in Louisiana who serve as inspiration to all of us, may provide some guidance to you as well. First, check out Michael Pate's (screen name Michael, here at BT) website and book, http://www.whenbigboystri.com/whenbigboystri.htm . Then, check out the very nice blog of Christopher (rugbykid) at http://tri-ingfatman.blogspot.com/ .

Sounds like you are approaching things corretly.  Clean-up the diet, start swimming and biking-low impact exercises....then build running in.  63 pounds is great progress so far and next April 07 shouldn't be a proble if you stick with it.

I would highly suggest the 'Beginner Exercise Program' that has been going-on.  It starts with a few months of strength training and biking only, then adds some swimming, then eventually running will be added into-the-mix.  Has a few nutrition tips at the end of each months program too.

Check it out the first month at: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=730

Awesome job Ernest! You sound like you are on the right path and you found a great place for information and support. The hardest part about starting is not trying to do too much too soon. The last thing you want to do is hurt yourself and feel that you are wasting time and revert to some bad habits.

Just keep looking for help, and you journey won't be a lonely one.

Welcome Ernest.  Congrats on your weight lost so far.

You'll find many individuals on this site who have been through the same challenges you are facing and have had many of the same questions that you are probably asking yourself.

I was 325# a year ago and have lost over 85# so far, so I know exactly what you are going through.

11 months is a very long time to maintain your focus on your goal.  It may help to keep your motivation if you volunteer at some local events, or even find a local event where some fellow BT'ers are racing and go to cheer them on.  The energy is contagious at an event, and you'll soon find it rather addictive.

Good luck in your adventure and don't hesitate to ask any questions.
