Subject: Post your healthy Shopping List

We eat very healthy at home (at least I believe so), but I was curious what other athlete's who are food conscious are eating.

Would be interesting to see what others drop on their weekly shopping lists to fuel up for multi-sport.

I'm working out my list right now, but figured I'd pass the notion around to see if others were up for it.

Maybe just drop your 10-15 most essential items if you don't want to go the whole distance....

We'll assume for simplicity's sake that I'm NOT shopping in Vietnam (then it would be more like...what items can I find that are reasonably healthy, not from China, and not ridiculously overpriced. We have runaway inflation on imported food and some domestic stuff, and it isn't pretty). Probably Trader Joe's. Also assume I'm out of everything at once (which wouldn't happen):

Breakfast stuff: Kashi puffs (the no-sugar kind), muesli, kefir, plain yogurt, whatever fresh or frozen fruit looks good (love berries), soymilk and/or milk (lactose intolerant but I mix milk with yogurt or kefir on cereal and then I can have it), whole wheat bread, peanut butter (natural kind w/peanuts and salt), butter, jam (berries and fruit juice kind), nuts (almonds or cashews, probably), whole wheat bagels for lunches (if I don't bring leftovers)

Dinner stuff: rice, pasta (sometimes whole-grain, sometimes not), tofu, boneless chicken breasts or thighs, maybe some chicken sausage (for spaghetti sauce), canned or fresh tomatoes/paste for pasta sauce, whatever veggies look fresh--some for salads and some Asian or southern greens to cook with wine, chicken broth, and/or garlic, spices like garlic, ginger, chili, and curry powder, coconut milk (make a lot of curries, cat likes it too)

Snacks, treats (not all every week!): fruit and nut mixes, Cliff Mojo bars, little bit of dark chocolate, frozen fruit and juice bars with raspberry or mango (in summer), sometimes baked tortilla chips with guacamole and salsa

Oink, oink! How much of this can I actually buy in Vietnam?? Almost none. You don't want to know what I have for dinner sometimes. Stomach growling just reading my dream shopping list. Happy eating!  BTW--My list is very low on sugary stuff as I hate sweets (except for the occasional piece of very dark chocolate. Not a diet thing--my taste buds are just weird!

Main aisles:
Black beans, chickpeas, green chilies, vegetarian refried beans, salsa verde, corn tortillas, jasmine rice, nuts (pine nuts, walnuts, almonds), natural peanut butter

lisa...you are so organized!

chicken, ground turkey meat (not breast, but reg ground turkey, there is a huge difference when cooking), lean red meats on occasion, oatmeal, lots of vegetarian fed eggs, almonds, natural peanut butter, whole wheat breads/bagels, bananas, apples, carrots and other veggies, yogurt, cottage cheese, hash browns (for a change of pace for carbs), low fat cheese, sliced turkey and ham (lean), skim milk

i'm sure i'm forgetting something.

as supplements go, i take aminO energy, which is a supp to replace bcaa's you lose when working out, and i also buy whey protein powder (gaspari/myofusion), and casein powder. i discovered that cottage cheese has a high casein protein content, so...i'm probably going to be done buying separate casein protein powder.

edit to add...salmon. i knew i forgot something!

From the grocery store or costco, we buy mostly the following:

Veggies (usually almost the whole cart!) in the winter

Fruits in the winter

raw nuts

uncured bacon and/or ham

raw milk cheese (usually cheddar)

dark chocolate

spices & oils

wild fish

Occasionally, meats (like chicken thighs & breasts, ground turkey, pork tenderloin and ground beef or beef steaks or stew meat if they have grass-fed).

Most of our meat comes from a couple of local farms.  Our eggs come from our backyard (as does our produce, in season).  Coffee is shipped to me and our wine comes from local wineries.

Paleo Shopping List:

Costco:  Mostly pantry staples like canned tuna, organic diced tomatoes, organic chicken broth, olives, sundried tomatoes packed in oil, almond butter ($5.99 for a large jar); bulk items (much cheaper!) like raw nuts: walnuts. almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts, raisins; omega3 eggs, fresh fruit (organic apples, grapefruit, oranges, local bananas).  Uncured canadian bacon, roasted preservative free whole turkey breast, garnet and purple sweet potatoes.  Acai juice and coconut water (occasional treats).

Whole Foods:  Maui Cattle Company beef (local, grass fed), uncured bacon, spices, dark chocolate, supplemental veggies, fresh wild caught fish and seafood, supplemental fruit, Larabars.

Farmers Market:  zucchini, eggplant, chard, kale, broccoli, jalapeno and serrano peppers, whatever happens to be in season and looks good.

Good friends, neighbors: trade some of our avocados, limes and bananas for mangoes, coconuts, passion fruit (lilikoi) and other back yard produce when available.

This isn't all necessarily weekly, but it's where we shop and what we buy.

Ooh man I missed a synth-troll on my post!
No I don't personally believe vegetarian refried beans are questionable - 98% of the ingredients are cooked beans and water. Thanks for the judgement though.

Silken tofu is a must for me.  I mix it w/ honey, protein powder, walnuts, milk and oatmeal for breakfast.  Also good as a shake w/ protein banana and milk w/ a scoop of pnut butter.

Trader Joes - apples, oranges, grapefruit, Joe's O's, Trader Joes Bran flakes, rice milk, bags of frozen veggies, rye bread, flowers, yogurt, pasta sauce, wheat pasta

Costco - organic eggs, string cheese, cliff bars, tortilla strips, salsa, salmon

Grocery Market - fresh veggies, watermelon, meat (chicken, turkey burger, hot italian sausage, etc), brown rice, sweet potatos

I was traveling 5 days a week, every week for work until very recently....so our household shopping habits haven't really been formed yet.  We need to do a better job of planning meals and buying for those meals than we are now.

Breakfast - Eggs, oats, blueberries, Cheerios for my son and I steal some.

Meats- Chicken breasts, ground chicken/turkey, chicken sausage, veggie burgers

Carbs - brown rice, WW pasta, WW bread

Tons of frozen mixed veggies for lunches during the week, corn, broccoli, apples, grapes, watermelon, sweet potato.

Snacks are natty PB, almonds, fruit leather sometimes, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, WW crackers.

My wife and I eat pretty healthy in general and my 11 month old son is already catching on, it's awesome.  He loves fruits and veggies and has some of my egg whites in the morning and a spoonful of my wife's oatmeal and blueberries.  Also, it's amazing how there really is very little you need in the middle aisles of the grocery store.  Such a true saying.

I am very curious about healthy diet to keep my body fit that's why I prefer vegetable and fruit juices, reduced-fat milk and yogurt (without added sugar), reduced-fat cheeses: cheddar, mozzarella, swiss, cottage, reduced-fat sour cream and cream cheese, whole-wheat and corn tortillas, eggs and minced garlic.
