when I first started swimming regularly two months ago it took me almost an hour to swim a mile. Today I finished a mile in 48 minutes (42 lengths crawl, 28 lengths breaststroke). How much more do you think I can improve in the next few months before my tri when swimming 2x/week? Keep in mind I am vertically challenged. Would I get much faster if I swam 3x/week than 2x??

I am no expert but in my opinion you could get faster by doing sets from a program, 100 yards or 100 meters sprints combining them with other sets. If you message me your e-mail I will send you the program I got from my coach it has really help me.

I find that when I swim 3x per week, I notice small gains. When I swim 4x per week, I notice more consistent small gains. When I swim 2x per week it's sort of a 2 steps forward, 1 back sort of progression. 1 x per week and I return feeling like I only swan once last week.

Additionally ... I have noticed a very nice progression in my swim improvements by swimming mostly sets of intervals with small rests (:5 to :20) rather than one long continuous swim. But others far more knowledgeable will probably speak with more authority on the matter.

But my short answer would be that the more you swim, the better you'll get.

Thanks BernardDogs. That helps. I don't think I could sustain 4 days/week since the pool is 25 min away from my home and also due to time constraints... but I definitely take your post as a plus one to increase to 3 days/week which I would happily do if it will pay offSmile

If your race is 1/3 mile why are you swimming a full mile? Do you swim the same each time? I would also suggests sets. One I like is a 200-300 warm up then 100,200,300,200,100 then a wam down. The numbers can change but I like the build. Maybe do some drills. Have fun.

I swim a mile (and yes I always swim one mile) because I enjoy it, but I get what you are saying about drills. So when you swim the 100s, 200s, etc. do you go at full sprint speed during them? How long a rest between each set? Thanks Keri!

I wouldn't go full out but hard, rest 10-15 seconds between sets. I try to go negative so the second 200 and 100 are faster than the first two. You could also do 200,400,600,400,200.

Hi Caroleena, not to hijack your thread but maybe you'll find the answer helpful. My question to KeriKadi, how much should a person swim for a 1/4 mile swim or a 1/3 mile swim?
