Is anyone else doing this race in 2012? If so, let's get the thread started

I just decided last night that I will be doing the Redman this year! Very excited. Have you done it before? Is it a good race for an Ironman first timer?

It will be my first iron distance race. I did Branson 70.3 and have Kansas 70.3 planned. Redman gets positive reviews mostly. It can be brutally hot in OKC that time of year and the lake levels were low enough you could probably have walked the swim course but this region has had some rain finally and maybe it will help.

Ahhh the heat. I did BSLT here in Lubbock last year and we set a new record for heat that day. 112 degrees.

Im looking forward to the course. Sounds fast. All of my HIM races have been super hilly on the bike and the run so we'll see how it goes!

I did the half there last year and would definitely recommend it.  My friends that were training for AZ did the aquabike full and had great races as well.

I'm doing IMCdA this year and haven't decided what I'm going to do at Redman yet.  If I have a bad race at CdA or I feel really good afterwards, I may attempt the full at Redman as well.  Or I might just do the half.  Plenty of time to decide.

Either way, I'll be back again this year and probably each year for years to come - great race and easy travel for me since my best friend lives in OKC.

Good luck to you both!

I'm planning on doing the Redman full this year, but haven't registered yet.  I did Ironman Lousiville last year and due to knee problems from earlier in the year, I had to walk the marathon.  Planning to "redeem" myself on the marathon portion of this race.  Looking forward to it.

I'm in for 2012. Just trying to figure out what training program to go with for this race. It will be my first 140.6 race.

RD emailed me today. Sounds like spots should open up July 1. Need to make sure my brother in law is going to do it. I said I would with him, so I better get training if so. Sounds like I will see several of you at the course if all goes as planned.

no way to know for sure.  He said last time they had the championships and held spots back they released 350 spots on July 1.  I assume there will be at least 300, but who knows.

I signed up for the half last night. I've thought about driving the course one day I'm up in the city. Although I'm not to worried about the bike course I've heard it's pretty flat. I live in the arbuckle mountains so it has to be flatter then what I ride every week.

Im certain it is flat, flatter than the Texoma area too, just thought it would be cool to reconnoiter the course ahead of time.

I should probably do some long rides in the lake Murray, Davis, Turner Falls area

I went through Turner Falls/Springer today. That is probably my favorite area to ride through.

Anybody that has done this race before do you have any hints on best places to stay?  I looked at hotels on google map and none of them looked real close.  I looked at the host hotel OKC Mariott and it didn't look as close as some of the others and didn't have a complimentary breakfast.  The breakfast normally would be a huge deal but it just puts an extra burdon on my wife because after she drops me off she will have to drive around trying to find some place to get the kids breakfast.

I booked a room at Courtyard Oklahoma City Northwest 1515 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Google says it's about 3.5 miles from the south side of Lake Hefner. It has a "bistro" with food available to purchase for breakfast and lunch.

This......stayed here before.  Also stayed at the Hampton Inn in Bricktown (downtown OKC).  Will give you family much more to do and also easy walk to many restaurants etc.  A tad bit longer to get to the race, but it's an easy drive either way.

I booked a room at the Country Inn.  Supposedly it's close to a mall (give the kiddos and family something to do while I'm on the bike).  In 2009, we tent camped at a lake 15 or 20 minutes away.  Decided to sleep (or toss and turn) in a real bed since I'm doing the full.  Hope everyones training is going well.

Hows everyones training going?  Things are going good with my swim and bike, but the run isnt going like I want.  Still having IT band/knee issues.  Doing most of my runs on the Eliptical.  Curious to see how it plays out.    Hope all is going well for everyone.
