Pre-race routine:

Easy drive up...however, parking went fast and I was jammed in but it took longer than expected...McQ saved me from wearing a base layer...I think the comment was "You really want to wear a base layer? I guess if you are looking for an excuse after the race, over heating is as good as any." :-)
Event warmup:

not much...just hung out with the BT crew...then suddenly, BAM we were off.
Run

Comments:

I was determined to control the first 4 miles...lots of people passing me, but the HR stayed jacked the whole time...not a good sign. Steph and I ran easy until the visitor center, then she peeled off to answer nature. At mile 5, there was hope! I ran the hills at an even pace, then bombed the hills. I started taking back lots of places. Around mile 8, my HR soared going up a steep hill and I blew up at the top. I tried to pick it up again, but the body was not happy and I did not feel like digging deep. I relaxed, slowed the pace, and the HR came down.

Few notes to self...it felt easier this year which is a good sign. I need a little more upper Z training to be better prepared for the effort. No ankle turns because I really focused on landing mid-foot and even. The left calve and ankle were barking at the end for some reason. Need to figure that one out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing....fun day.
Post race
Warm down:

due to family logistics...I had to leave quickly. I was drenched and need to change badly. I went from the finish line to the car, stripped down and got into some dry cloths. Hung with McQ, Chris and some other BT people for 15-20 minutes. I bolted and got home on time which is huge for the next hall pass request.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

When you run Z2 on the road for 4 months, you can't drop the hammer and got into Z5 and expect much! I love this race, so it was more about enjoying a day in woods. It was a perfect day and I would not change a thing except a little more time to hang with the peeps.

Event comments:

RTR is on my schedule for the foreseeable future. My favorite trail race.

As usual, always a good time hangin with thecaptin.  You didn't warn me about all the sneaky climbs though, mile 8 was a HR buster and the one at 10 did me in.

Hey, solid race and way to push the HR, which is inevitable on the trails, your continued base build is going to pay some sweet dividends later in the season so the racing is your Z5 workouts.

That was funny though about the base layer for 57 degrees and drizzly.

Now I understand why RTR sells out so quickly, that's some good stuff.

Nice race James!  I predict many PRs this year with the solid training you've been doing.
