Overcast
Total Time = 3h 39m 14s
Overall Rank = 740/751
Age Group = F45-49
Age Group Rank = 8/8
Pre-race routine:

Up at the crack of dawn, breakfast of a Protein bar, cup of tea, water and sports drink. Very nervous to the point of shaking! Lots of toilet stops!
Event warmup:

Did a fair bit of walking getting the lay of the land. for the start had a 10min warm up on the open water, get a feel for depth, currents and temperature. Shallow, no current, chilly.
Swim
  • 42m 18s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was by no means my fastest swim, could easily knoxk this out in 30-35mins but being my first Olympic I paced myself. got run over by three of the male waves behind which was annoying! Didn't catch anyone's toes for drafting really. Two of my age group caught me on the swim for shore - I should not have let them. However i would have lost them running the 800m uphill to transition!
What would you do differently?:

Probably when I do my next long course I will go a bit harder....
Transition 1
  • 05m 32s
Comments:

Transition is not something I'm good at nor have I worked at it. I'm not in bike shoes yet so I have to get my runners on etc. Wetsuit got a bit stuck on left heel. This 5.32 includes the 800m run!
What would you do differently?:

practice.
Bike
  • 1h 40m 41s
  • 40 kms
  • 23.84 km/hr
Comments:

This is the easiest discipline to fix with practice. If you can ride a bike then all you need to do is develop leg strength to go harder/faster/longer.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

I'm still in running shoes and cages so this is a breeze for me!
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Run
  • 1h 08m 5s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 49s  min/km
Comments:

I was exhausted! BUt I got into the run easily enough off the bike so that was good. i stuck to run/walk 2mins/1min for a while, then ran the last 2km. I still had fuel in the tank for the end so that was good.
What would you do differently?:

nothing, hopefully make up a better time on bike then the run doesn't matter!
Post race
Warm down:

a couple of Gatorades, a lemonade a sit on the grass.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of specific training. Northerly strong gusty winds were a nightmare on the bike.

Event comments:

my first Olympic - I'm so happy I've done it. I've conquered the swim which was a big mental challenge, thanks to my coach John Van Wisse. Now I'm going to work on the bike. woohoo!

I felt for you guys doing the race later in the day, those winds made for tough conditions. Congrats on overcoming the mental challenge of 1500m in the open water and your first Oly distance!

Pretty sure we were talking about how far the swim looked and finding out which direction to go in!  Catch you at the next one - not sure if I've got any more in Melbourne this season....Cairns 2.80.20 is June!
