I picked u the new 910 from a local bike shop yesterday and used it this morning. I know I read about the swolf and eff. here somwhere but with somany 910 threads I couldn't find it. What do they mean?  My eff. was 34.82 and avg swolf was 30. Is this good bad ? It was nice to see I was swimming faster then I thought. This was alot easier to keep track of distance then counting in your head and hoping ou where close. My avg speed was 1:40 per 100 yards. Thanks for the help.

I too have the Garmin 910xt...congrats on an awesome purchase.  However, I am a new swimmer so your numbers are phenomenal to me.  The following is from the Garmin 910xt manual...

Your swolf score is the sum of the time for one length and the number of strokes for that length. For example, 30 seconds plus 15 strokes equals a swolf score of 45. Swolf is a measurement of swimming efficiency and, like golf, a lower score is better.

Your swim efficiency index is the sum of the time and the number of strokes that it takes to swim 25 meters. This allows you to compare your swim efficiency to another pool or an open water workout. A lower swim efficiency index is better.

Something is not right with your Garmin. If you are swimming 1:40 per 100 yards, then in order to get 30 for swolf, you would have to do this with only 5 strokes per 25 yds.

I haven't downloaded the data yet but looking at my first lap. It has 19:81 per 25 y 6 strk 19 spm 27.34 eff and 25 swolf. Another lap I looked at is 22:06 per 25 6 stroke 16 spm 30.62 eff and 28 swolf. I don't know what the overall avg for swolf is. I have a bunch at 30 and 32 also. I will look into that. I am trying to figure out the length of the pool I swam at. I was talking to a friend after I posted the first comment. He mentioned he thinks the pool is shorter then 25y. So that will mess with the numbers also. Thanks for explaining the swolf and eff though. I did find the english instruction book just before I read your comment. It was hidden in the bunch

Let me hijack this thread a little to ask: "How did you get it to record your info?"

I set mine to swim mode, pool swim, 25 yard.  Hit Start, swam 25, hit lap.  Gave me the time but nothing else.  Tried also with hitting stop and restart.  Nothing but time.  Something obvious I am missing?

I never hit the lap button it will keep track of that on its own. Set it to swim like you said, pool swim set length of pool. Press start and swim. I stop it when I rest other then that it records the info all by itself.

More info, I downloaded it to Garmin connect and it lists all of the intervals as rest.  So I see the time for my first 25 (Rest) then :15 (rest) then another rest which was my return swim.  Will try again tomorrow and not hit the lap button.  The only thing I can think of was that I hit the lap button instead of the start button but I saw the timer start.  Will chalk this one up to user error and will try again tomorrow.

My guess is that it must do a rest when you hit the lap button. I swear everyday I learn something new about this watch.

I tried mine for the first time yesterday.   I hit lap after say 500m warmup, then lap after different sets, and the watch reports metrics on these sets as intervals.   I haven't uploaded the data to Garmin Connect, so haven't seen full reports, just watch the watch displays in activities (history).

I've tried mine two different ways. First where I just hit start/stop to end and begin intervals, http://connect.garmin.com/activity/152514159and where I hit lap/reset to end/begin intervals http://connect.garmin.com/activity/153312050. Still getting missing and extra laps as you can see. And I may use some combo of lap/reset and start/stop to get the data to look better. You'll see what I mean. And don't hit buttons unless you're resting or done.
