Is anyone else obsessed with training? I find myself obsessed with running and biking, running more so than anything, and to think I used to hate it. I'm a HORRIBLY SLOW runner, but I just can't get enough of it. Even on my "rest days" I go for a run. Is anyone else this way?

Join the club.  I even like the same discipline you do.  I would run every day if I could.  My whole life I shied away from running because I had a bad ankle and bad knees.  Then when I decided to do a tri I figured I better give running a shot since, you know, it's part of it.  I have fallen in love with the simplicity of it and have had almost zero injuries.  I way over emphasized the run this winter and really love it now.  Plan to do the same with the other two next winter.

Keep running - you will get faster!

I love training, and when I'm on a roll, watch out! But I also know that in order for me to improve, I need those days off to let my body rebuild so that I can come back stronger for the next workout. Even elite athletes take days off from training.

IMHO, you're asking for an injury to happen. Can you substituate something less strenuous for your rest days like a long walk with the dog or an easy hike.

I figured that I could walk some of the path ways around my house for my rest days. I know I do need to utilize them as I am starting to feel fatigue but only after the run. Before and during I am fine. But I haven't had a real "rest day" ever since I started traing a few months ago, so I know I need to take some eventually, but I just feel if I stop all the "excitement" I won't want to get back to it, but I guess that's better than being injured and never being able to do it again.

I think about training all day. It's one of the things that other people have a hard time spoiling.

It is very easy to get obsessed with it.......especailly since you have three things to choose from. I love to train - I wish there was more time in the day for it.... When the weather starts getting nice - all I want to do is train....I just love being outside in the sunshine!!

Training is what it is all about.  Races are just the reward for getting up every morning.

I would say I am obsessed with training. When I am not training, I am thinking and talking about it. My Fiancé and the people I work with are sick of me. If I do not workout when I get home from work I do not know what to do with myself so I tend to do something easy on my off days. The better shape I am in, the worse it gets.

I LOVE TRAINING. For instance this morning when I was getting ready for my day (which is supposed to be a rest day) I started packing my workout stuff. My boyfriend looked at me and asked me what I was doing. I told him I was just going to go for a little run after work. He rolled his eyes at me and told me I was becoming obsessive. So, I didn't pack my workout gear. I'm forcing myself to go grab a few drinks after work instead.

So true about the better shape you are in the more obsessive you become about it. I just love the way it makes me feel and look. It's such a confidence booster.

I too have come to dread rest days... I have a very hard time coming to accept that my body is bettering itself even if I'm not working it.

If I have something coming up where I probably won't be able to train for a few days at a stretch I get terribly irritable.

I love pushing myself, but I also love just going out and going long sometimes. Swimming not so much, but biking (first) and running (second) definitely. I started out as a runner, though.

How much? Well, if it weren't for work...

It's almost an obsession for me. I get up every morning and do a combination of swimming, biking or running followed by core lifting. If I do less than two of those a day, not including lifting, which I do five days a week, I feel like I didn't work out and am down on myself all day. Today is an exception -- I woke up and did abs but didn't have time for a meaningful run so I'm going after work for an hour on the trail. It's Friday night and I'll spend part of my evening running -- how sad is that? My coworkers say I'm obsessed and I pretty much stopped talking about it to my wife because I KNOW she's getting sick of hearing about exercise. She does appreciate the results of said exercise, though.

In addition to training, I have become obsessd with this web site!!!!!! In the past nearly two months I have visited this site at least 1 million times (ha) and other resources on the web! There is just so much information out there for beginners and so much support and motivation and inspiration! And I'm so in love with my new hobby, my new obsession!

Uhh, My wife tells me I am obsessed with training... I can't help I want to do more than I did when I was 20yrs old, but it just has to be done. My co-workers were shocked this morning after I finished a 4.7 mile run and then played football with them for 1 hour. They think I am nuts too.

Word. People are *SO* sick of me. Someone posted a comic strip in the breakroom about people who are always coming in and talking about signing up for athletic events. I'm pretty sure they're making fun of me... :P

You can't be in this gig if you don't love training, there is no way to train just to race. I get pretty cranky if I miss a workout.

I LOVE to train... but i also love a lot of other things, which makes for quite the balancing act. E.g. today I got up at 5 to go volunteer at my community radio station & will be practicing with the church band (back-up singer) tonight until late, so that makes today a "rest" day before my long ride tomorrow.

And of course for those of you with kids, well, my crazy schedule doesn't even come close to yours!

But MAN, training feels so good. Today if I sit still at my desk too long my legs get a little stiff because of a hard run last night... and it feels SO GOOD to know I'm getting stronger. LOVE IT! Life. Is. Good.

I love to train, much more so than actually racing.  I'm a slug of a runner, but I love the endorphin rush I get after plodding along for the first mile or so...

You know, I love to train; I love the way I feel during and after a good run, I love going to a race knowing I've done the prep work and can finish proudly; I love a day when I've managed to balence the training I want to do with the work/family/life stuff that I also want to do. I love the way I feel all day if I've gotten in a good session (perhaps this is why I train so much in the morning? )NOT being able to train (well, "train" sounds so formal. Maybe I should say "NOT being able to swim/bike/run" ) would leave me feeling like a caged animal.

And I love rest days, because I know I've earned them, because they allow me to relax and sleep and enjoy the workouts that come after them. I love rest days because that means I that can enjoy all the other things I do with my life and not feel like I have neglected training.

Sure, my non-tri/non-athletic friends make fun of me for going to the gym at lunch, or getting up two hours earlier than them to go run, but I wouldn't say I'm obsessed, I would say that I'm balenced Training is an important part of my day, but it still is only one part.
