Just a pre-holiday bump .... and to say I hit 90 days last Thursday. It's definitely more habit now, which makes it easier. Downside is that there is all this life stuff and feelings and crap I actually have to deal with instead of hiding behind alcohol and hangovers :-)

Hope everyone is doing okay! Happy Holidays!

Congratulations, and keep tackling those unearthing emotions one day at a time. And don't look at life, and its' feelings as the downside. There always there as you know, taking command of them soberly creates such an inner strength and a BETTER person to those around you! I had a father bury all those things in alcohol and he lost chances at genuine relationships with his sons. Keep striving

Congrats Marti! Those are the hard first three months. It will get easier, but keep in mind that when things get easier, we tend to get complacent and WHAMO, you wake up hungover! It gets easier, but it never goes away. I Hit 14 years the other day. It can be done if you want it. Keep your guard up on New Years and try to avoid any parties.

Well done all of you! I'd like to join you, both on this thread and on this journey. Not sure if I never want to drink again but after heavy holidays drinking, I started to feel that I "needed" a drink every day or I was very irritable. Sign that it's time to stop, so I am having break. First day was Wednesday. I managed not to have a drink last night (Friday) even when my partner opened a bottle of wine, which feels great this morning.
Wish me luck!

Thanks.

Yes, it's a great feeling. Although I don't (didn't?) often get big hangovers, I always woke up with a nagging headache and didn't sleep well.

Managed Saturday night too, it's gonna be easy until next Friday now!

I think I'll go for a run to celebrate (have been neglecting my training lately, time to start afresh)

Hello, New Me! Nice to meet you!

Welcome and welcome back to everyone ... this is a great thread and great people who should really be supported, I'll try to pop in more! Also, I'm excited that we can say (oops, guess we can't say it) in here. Or is it that Popeye (cgregg) got around it with BBCode formatting? ETA: clearly Popeye has magic tricks

So in the interest of being honest (we're only as sick as our secrets, right?), I had a slip last Thursday. I had been thinking about having a few drinks for days ... but I went to extra meetings, made phone calls, prayed my off ... all the stuff that's supposed to save you. But I made the decision to drink anyway. The reasons aren't that important. The funny thing is that it wasn't as fun and interesting as I thought it could be. And it wasn't the horror long-timers say it will be if I drink again ... it was much more subtle than that. Nothing awful happened that night. But it's the aftermath that's been the teacher: I felt terrible the next day, missed some work, didn't eat as cleanly as I like, missed a workout, and I am still dealing with some sluggishness and brain fog. I'm trying hard to not live in this place of guilt and regret too long, but I know it is important to look at what happened so I can make the necessary adjustments so I can handle myself better in the future.

I have to say, though, that my Type A personality is so peeved that instead of being on day 114, I'm on day 4. My sobriety date was the exact same as my first day free from compulsive eating and smoking and now I have two different days to keep track of. This drives me crazy. I know it's silly, but it's true for me.

Anyway ... here we go ... day 4 (again).

i am new to all this so I don't really know what it's like to have a slip or if it's always a bad thing. Maybe you needed that to keep you on track?
And now you have 2 dates to celebrate every year, yeah!!

GOOD LUCK! I find that I, too, have a hard time with transitions - from work day to evening or from work week to weekends. The smoother I can make that transition, the better. Now I keep my weekend routine as close to the regular week as possible, and I plan something for those transitions that I look forward to. I ask myself what I really need - soothing? A connection with another human being? Something that feels celebratory but is healthy? The booze used to be the answer to all those things, but now I know there are alternatives, although it took some work and some thinking (and, truth be told, sitting through some uncomfortable moments) to get there.

Hope it's a good and healthy weekend for you!
