Subject: Marathon 1 Month after 1/2 Ironman

Hi all.  Is a marathon doable 1 month after doing a 1/2 Ironman?  Well I know its doable I guess my question is going to be geared more toward training.  Both the 1/2 Ironman and the marathon will be 1st's for me so I am in them to just finish.  I do want to have a respectable time in both though.  I was thinking sub 6 hours for the 1/2 and sub 4 hours for the marathon...

Anyway, I have been messing around and looking at training schedules and if I start the marathon training 18 weeks out from the race it would put my 18 mile long run on race day of my 1/2 Ironman.  The week before would be a 12 mile dial it back recovery week.  Is it ok just to switch these weeks in the marathon plan?  I think it would be fine because then race week for the 1/2 Ironman would be dialed back and hopefully I'll peak in swimming and biking then as I will still be following my 1/2 plan.

I just started my 1/2 Iron plan...is=ts a looooong plan as race day isn't until Sept 2nd.  Gotta love BT's training plan creator.

I am voting for yes. I say this because I have the same exact palns this year only a bit more aggressive. I am doing an adventure race which invovles a half marathon, 20 miles on/off road bike ride and very hilly, 2.5 mile swim, 7 mile orienteering and very hilly, 4.5 mile run and finishes with an 8+ mile canoe trip. Four weeks after that I am doing my first HIM and then five weeks after that I am running my 7th marathon.

The weekend of your HIM I would not worry about any running other than the half you have to run for it. Depending how you feel the next week I would do some very easy pace runs and maybe 14 thatSunday at an easy pace. The week after that if your body feels good get back to following your marathon schedule. Good luck.

I think someone asks this question at least every other day. Yes it is doable. Your body won't spontaneously explode. It probably won't be your greatest time but definitely manageable. Listen to your body and make your decision based on yourself, not what other people have to say.

x2...agreed.

Now to your point about completing them in good fashion.

Draw up a training plan as if you were going to just do the HIM under 6 hours.

Then draw up a training plan as if you were just going to do the marathon under 4 hours.

Now try to combine the two as each race fits (with taper and assumed recovery) into your calandar.  How well do they mesh?

They mesh pretty darn well if I move the marathon recovery week to my 1/2 Ironman race week.   The recovery week in the marathon plan calls for a 12 mile long run which I would get in by doing the 1/2 Ironman.  My only concern is running 18 miles the weekend before the 1/2 Ironman that I would be trading with the recovery week.  I think the 18 mile long run is one of the very important key runs while training for a marathon and don't think I should skip it or substitute the whole 1/2 Ironman race for it....

LOL...All I need is for the Marathon race date to be pushed back just 1 week and i would have to tweak nothing!

18-13.1=4.9 If you dont think swimming 1.2 and cycling 56 will make up for running 4.9 then by all means, run 4.9 after the 1/2 IM and call it a day.

Definitely doable.  I did this last year, and PR'd my marathon all based on HIM training.  Just add a little more running to your plan and you'll be good.  not to much though, I think I was averaging 25 mpw, and barely crossed 35 on the heavy weeks.
