Subject: 910XT pool question

I had my first swim with the 910 today. I also used my lap counter finger watch just to compare results. Comparing lap times and counts over 1750 yards, the 910 missed 5 turns and registered 1625 yards (25 yard pool). Interestingly, I was doing flip turns for the 2/3rds and according to the logs, all the skipped laps occurred during the flips. I was doing open turns the last 1/3rd and no laps were missed.

The kick off my flip turns was somewhat inconsistent, sometimes I was short to the wall, sometimes long therefore some kick offs were light. I am guessing this is the cause of the missed laps.

Has anyone else experienced missed laps with the 910xt? Is the sensitivity adjustable somehow?

Pete

I have missed laps when I do flip turns. Not so when I do open turns. No adjustment that I'm aware of. But I am having BIG problems uploading. Anyone else?

Uploads just fine for me. Do you have the latest version of the Garmin Ant+ agent? It's required (I believe) for the swim stuff to get transferred.

First time I used mine, it was dead on.  Yesterday I did the first day of 0-1650 training (700yds on 1st day), and it recorded an extra 150 yds.  But I'm thinking because I grabbed the wall, rested for 12 breaths, put my arm back, and then started swimming again about 30 seconds later.  But other than that it's perfect when I don't do that lol

Mine has worked almost flawlessly.  I think I've only had one miscount of a length in 4-5 swims.

No missed laps with freestyle + open turns.  50m backstroke + 50m breastroke turned into 275m Mixed :\  Kicks only not registered.  But for those type of workouts I just use the Interval function and then just copy and paste the workout and indicate each interval.  Works awesome.

mine adds laps more then it miss laps.  all flip turns.  I suspect it is something I do with my hands.  Most of the swim it is dead on but every now and then it registers me swimming a really fast lap.

99% of the time I do flip turns and it records the laps exactly.  The only problems I've had is when I do an occasional open turn, then I have noticed it to miss laps.

Mine will add extra laps and often make the back half of a lap considerably slower than the front half.

Mine has worked flawlessly so far for both flip and open, dcrainmaker updated his 910 review with some pool tips which could help you, basically 910 records the lap through the accelerometer (sp?) and so a strong push off is required...  hope that helps

Mine has worked flawlessly, but all my turns are flip turns and I always push off the wall strongly, so I am not sure if the push off is what's causing the issue for you. The only problem I have had is that on one of the workouts, it identified back and breast incorrectly, but since then it has been 100% accurate when I do these strokes.

To add another data point, it was spot on the first week I had it. Now, it's all over the place and frequently misses laps (had it about a month now). Also, I push off the wall (don't know how to flip turn). I'm guessing based on the info here, it's not quite where it needs to be in reliability. Perhaps there's issues with the accelerometers. I'm hoping it's software based and it gets fixed. I push off the wall quite hard so don't think that's the issue.

Hum, interesting.  I admit when I am swimming lazy not only do I not push off strong I am super lazy in my flips, hanging out there upside down for a bit.  I've not noticed it affecting the counts.

I have the extra laps counted as well when I go pool swimming.  All open turns as well.  I pay more attention to the interval time anyway so that's not too much of a bother to me.

Regarding the upload problem, I found power cycling the watch made it transfer the data to the USB ANT+.

My only issue has been that it misses a turn (open turn) and records a really long length (time wise) which I just correct when logging to BT.  I do tend to hit the Lap button every hundred (when I remember to) so its not a huge issue.  I have gotten to the point on longer sets (550 or longer) I don't count and just check the watch to see where I am at.  The number of times I have forgotten the lap count and just guessed is probably way more than the issues the 910xt has giving me.  So far love the watch for swimming (first open water this weekend).  Tend to rely more on my PT for rides and I don't see a huge improvement over the 405 (except for screen real estate) for the run.

So far, so good for me.  Even the upload went well.....gasp.  I'm going for another swim tonight so I will be curious to see the comparisons.

On another note, is there any way for the watch just to show the current time?  Can't we just wear it as a regular watch if we want to/have to?

If you go to the data fields you can add time of day to one of them. You will have to keep it in that mode to see time of day.

I've noticed it does well when I'm swimming.  When I'm doing drills, specifically when my watch-arm is not moving regularly, it does not record the lap (kick only, one arm drills, etc.)

Did another swim today. This time I had very strong kicks - flip turns only. Had my best 500 yard and 500 meter times ever, over 20 seconds off my old PR and under 8 minutes for 500 yards. Yaa me!

However, the 910 missed 5 turns in the 1st 22 lengths - 550 yards. Part of that time I was doing circular laps because of lane sharing, so I was launching off the wall at a bit of an angle to change halves of the lane. Maybe that has something to do with it today. I used my finger lap counter watch as a backup lap counter, cause I can't count past 2 laps without it.

I'll take a look at rainmaker's tips to see if there is something I can do different/better to get more accurate lap counts. I hope that it's something I or Garmin can correct. I had very high expectations for the watch and after 2 swims I am starting to get disappointed.

I just read DCRainmaker. Nothing there to help with better counting of laps, BUT I use sporttracks to track my workouts and DCRainmaker pointed me to:

http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/sporttracks/plugins/?p=pool-swimming

This plug-in let me very easily fix/split the laps!!

I'd rather the 910 was more accurate, but at least this plug-in is awesome and now I can get the laps sorted out!!
