Like swimming in a sauna. Our masters class (6 AM) was transformed into a session of low intensity work on form. I threw in the towel after about 30 minutes (wasn't feeling well anyway). Have never seen the pool this hot, and hope I don't again. Made for a miserable experience.

Our Y is set at 84 daily (b/c of the wide variety of ages that use the pool). hated it at first and now I am used to it. Makes swimming in colder waters that much more enjoyable!

The college pool I swim at is usually 80, but the rec center I go to is always 85.  I really don't mind the warmer temps.  Probably because I'm so slow.

Mine is 87-88 every day.  85 would be incredible.

I thought are pool has been a tad cooler than usual the last few weeks. Actually it seemed a bit chilly jumping in but quickly warm up. A few days ago I noticed a thremometer on the ladder so I took a look and it was 78. I thought man, and I thought it was cold, I'm gonna need to HTFU lol.

OWS planned for this weekend though, water temp around 56. Time to learn to like my wetsuit.

Umm, was there a group lesson for kids just prior to your swim?

Unfortunately more and more YMCA-type facilities are moving towards this model.  It's getting downright impossible to find a pool of appropriate temperature unless you happen to live near a (real) college.

I've learned to live with up to 82.  Over 82 and it starts to negatively impact my workout and I will complain about the temp.  Over 85 and you really just can't swim.  I'd prefer below 80.

People need to complain if they think the temperature is too hot.  I REALLY believe that if we can get the number of "too hot" complaints to outweigh the "too cold" complaints then these pools will be forced to take action.  I know at the YMCA I went to in Florida so many of the old ladies would complain if it was below 84.  And while a lot of the swimmers in the water would complain to EACH OTHER, they were not bringing their concerns to the front desk.  All the desk ever heard was the old ladies wanting it warmer!  I tried to get everyone I could to complain to the desk about the temperature.

Complain! I used to lifeguard years ago where i swim all the time now. The old ladies who would come in to "swim"(but really all they do is float around and gossip) always complained and nagged if the water wasn't 85 or above. There is no good use for warm water. The people who count the beans for the pool like to keep the costs down and the heating of the pool water is very high sometimes. Your complaints would probably be heard.

I go to a pool where if it was under 80 (could be 79) 1 girl was always going to head home.  Another might stay but she'll complain the whole time.  I hate it when it is above 80.  Give me 78 any day please.  Harder to get in (especially when it is 35 or so on deck) but one lap and I am fine.  But, all pools in Tucson are outdoors.  So you can just imagine what it is like in the summer.  Many pools have heaters, I have yet to see one with a cooler.

You live in Arizona, and you've never seen an aerator?

You must swim at one of those fancy swimming places.

The pool I swim in is usually fairly warm.  Not unbearable, though.  One time I went in and there wasn't a soul in the pool.  The lifeguard said "the heater isn't working but you'll probably like it."  It was nice to have the whole pool to myself! Tongue out

Every time our heater breaks we tell the front desk to keep it that way.  Sadly there are way too many geriatrics who complain loud and hard if it drops below 87.

Ours is usually 86.  When it gets down to 82 many people complain.  I would prefer it in the 70s.

The pool I normally train is always this hot, often hotter. Air temps can hit triple digits too on my long workouts, which have to be Saturday afternoon as that's the only time I have access for more than one hour. Thus the frequent comments in my log about the "puke zone"!  I keep a big bottle of Nuun next to the pool and just try to keep drinking. It's used for swim instruction during the school day, but our swim teams train in it. Ouch!  If your hot pool was an unusual situation, though, I'd complain. It can probably be remedied. In our case (indoor pool with passive-solar "heat" in the tropics), I don't think it can or will be changed.

And you are complaining? I swim in a pool that is 86 degrees and I LOVE IT. In fact, I pay $45 a month for that particular gym FOR the warm pool. It's awesome.

Think of it as great training and acclimation for that August race in the lake that is 88 degrees on the surface.

I just wish the pool was always 79 degrees, the air temp for my rides are 75 degrees sunny and the air temps for running is 55 degrees with an overcast sky.  Now that would be awesome.  Unfortunately most races I've been to tend to be the opposite of those ideal training conditions.

But you are right, a really warm pool just flat stinks and no fun to swim in.

I know I'm in the minority but I love a warmer pool. I've never liked being any kind of cold. Jumping in the pool is the worst part of every swim -- I make a face every time and I know the lifeguard is laughing at me behind my back. The lap pool at my gym is kept at 78-79 but the family pool is warmer, maybe low to mid 80s, so that's where the kids and noodlers end up.

I swim at a place with an exercise pool and a lap pool. I think they keep the lap pool at about 79. It is totally perfect for lap swimming, but tonight I was in there with an instructor and we were standing still and talking for a few minutes every lap or two, and I was shivering. Perfect temperature to exercise in, I love it. I am not too warm when I get out.

The exercise pool is of a warmish bathtub temperature, I think 86. That's the pool I go in with my baby for his little don't-be-afraid-of-the-water fun class, but if I were to do laps in there I think I'd puke...if I were able to pick up enough speed going around all the noodlers, that is. Growing up, my family would call anything over 83 a "pee pool."

My regular pools are the usual slightly chilled water.  I joined a temporary training group until first week of May that meets once a week at a gym I don't go to with one location that has a warm pool in the 80's.  First time I swam there I got the migraine from hell.  Lasted well after the session.  No problems since except sometimes some pressure when we swim long (~30-40 minutes continous swims).  I've come to enjoy it =)

One of the pools I go to is usually too warm but I love the swim squad there and we are usually all puce by the time we're finished.  Unfortunately, the old ladies doing aqua aerobics and aqua Zumba (WTF?) like it lovely and warm so that the talc topped tsunami they produce is extra offensive.  I much prefer the chilly pools but I know so many people who won't swim in them because they feel it's too cold, and yes, it feels cold --- for about the first 5 seconds!  Rant over, Mike, I feel your pain.

My pool is always around 83-85 degrees at the Y.. its like bath water.. whenever it gets below 80 it becomes a complaining forum. The people that typically complain aren't doing anything.

Its really tough to swim in temps like that in an indoor environment.. i get overheat pretty fast.

Well, the swim director has told me the heater gets a little whacky when the outdoor temp changes radically (was 80 here yesterday - normal high is 50's). Should be back to normal today. Pool is usually 79-80, which feels much better.

No kids class before ours, thankfully
