Subject: TrainerRoad work out group

So I was thinking of starting a work out group thread. I'm curious how many folks here use Trainer Road, and how many use the training programs there.I love using TR on the trainer for virtual power.

Personally, I plan to keep doing some structured trainer work out, as well as getting out to do some regular long rides. I have Sufferfest videos and love using them on TR. So I can mix it up and keep it interesting. I was looking into following one of the plans because they have substitution for long outside rides. Also, I was told there is some stuff in the works to make those outdoor workouts better with downloads to devices to follow during the ride... too cool!

So what say you guys... we could do a thread in the "Challenge Me" forum... I'm just asking here to get a wider audience.

I was consistently using TR until the weather got nicer. I'd like to mix it up too, so if you start a challenge I'm in. Need to get ready for my first HIM!

I'd be in ... but may be restricted to early morning workouts. I'd be able to consider some evenings as well, but I'm usually biking early morning.

I only do my long rides outside when it is nice. Even in season most of my time is on the trainer. I use TR for all the rides. Depending on how the challenge is structured I would definitely be interested. Count me in.

How would you like it structured. I'm don't know how the challenges go. I was just curious, but certainly open to suggestions.

I would be down for that.  I will be/have been doing 2-3 weekday rides on the trainer using TR but my long ride will be outside.

I thought it would be a group where we can all talk about how painful each ride is .  I already have 44 rides on TR...love it.

i am currently on TR with sufferfest at least once usually twice a week, weekends are racing or long ride outside, and the weather in the Northeast is awesome right now.

Even if it doesnt happen now, with spring here and all, we should certainly keep it in mind for fall winter next year.

i am in either way

I love TR, but only use it intermittently.  those early cold dark mornings when I can't leave the house for a run.  Weather is getting nice, so the TR workouts are going to be spaced even further apart.

TR is terrific.  But real cycling is a lot more fun.  it has gotten me interested in a power tap tho'.

That's a really good question.  When I hear "challenge" I think competition, but I guess it doesn't have to be that.  We could just start a group I guess.  Like Jorge's winter cycling.  We don't have to get all bravado in there, because clearly I would win.  Wink

ETA:  If we want it to be a competition we could go for something like total estimated miles or something like that.  Or time.

Ya, distance can work. it would include time.... OOOHH or we could do total monthly TSS points or something like that. So that would be time or intensity or both. And even though second place to me isn't bad... you are still last if you ain't first.

And that was sort of what I was thinking about... Jorge's plan is just members in the plan, and we keep track of CP improvements. But I just thought it would be cool to have a TR group and we can discuss how we use it and how the plans are working for what we are doing.

The more I think of it, the more I think just starting a group without a "competition" would be best.  Although now my interest is piqued so I'm in either way.  Let's do this.

Does anyone else have other suggestions?

Wasn't there talk about "group rides" as an option? Maybe they could arrange it so we're all wearing our bluetooths and listening to one another grunt and wheeze our way through the workouts.

Are you going to pee on your bike in virtual reality too?

Tomorrow and Sunday look rainy here, I'll be on TR. If nothing else we can do the same ride on the same day and compare. I haven't been on the bike since last Sunday's mishap, so it should be interesting.

The headset thing is too much like listening to the one-sided conversations my kid has on Xbox live. First person to yell 'on your left' gets shot.

Sounds good guys. that is sort of what I thought too...The winter workout group is just a group. If challenges appear so be it.

I am out of town this week end but will get this started and then link to some threads we have had on TR. I am also going to ask Nate for some input and see if he wants to add anything. Hopefully it will also turn into a source of info like the other workout thread did. Great stuff.

Like some of the other responses, I think it sounds fun and would be interested but hopefully will be outside more than in on the trainer now that the weather is improving.  Nice idea, keep me posted!

I'm in...

As for challenges, what about doing an 8 minute test at the beginning, then doing an 8 minute test roughly 30 days later?  The person with the biggest change in w/kg is the winner?

That way, we can still get outside on days when it's nice.

I actually like that idea. You are still working on threshold inside or out, and it gives incentive to get down to race weight. At least I know I need to. Plus it will keep me motivated to keep testing. That seems the most reasonable because it does not matter how high someones threshold is. We would have to be able to even the field fpr everyone to be involved. Would W/kg change per month alone work, or make that % of original. So say (a)10 w/kg to (b)11 w/kg so 1 watt difference or 10% improvement in W/kg?

Percentage may be best - so that playing field is even. We should ask someone who is a power expert what they think the best representation of improvement is. How do you guys want to keep track of stats?

Someone who is handy with excel can make a google doc and we could have a "weigh in" so to speak and then a planned weigh in at the end.  And during the challenge we can ask questions, egg each other on, poke fun, etc. in the forum.

Finally back home. sounds like the upgrades for TR are a month or so away. I would like to start this at the same time to help promote a great product and get outdoor training counted.

We could come up with challenge for the month of April. I am going to talk to Marmadaddy to see what some options are.

I would be in!  I've only been riding outside recently (just too nice after being on the trainer for a few months!).  I NEED to get on the trainer though for some key workouts so this challenge group would help me to do that.

Perhaps you can get Nate into the group (at least the discussion)---and maybe if there's a % w/kg improvement type of challenge then Nate could offer a free month of TRTongue out  And as someone that trains with power---I'd say % improvement of w/kg is the way to go for any competition.  At least until TR allows us to load a workout/course then it could get interesting.....................

OK guys... back in the real world now.

I have not gave up on this. I think we can do a April challenge. Perhaps even a Spring challenge since it just started. We could just count any workout since the first day of Spring. I will post it up when it gets worked out. One thing is the new features for TR are a little ways off and we don't have to wait.... however, I am trying to work out some other stuff and if that happens it will be a bit more involved.

I think we can do both, highest TSS score for the period, and most improved W/kg % change. If this will kick off for April, then we will have to do a 8 min test on TR just to make it official... just giving a heads up.

Hmmm. Two separate challenges? With IMTX on the horizon, I can't imagine not taking the opportunity to get outside for the 5-6 hour rides. Definitely gonna hurt my tss time...

I'm here in case anyone has any questions.

I'd like to code it up so groups like this are automatic.

We are also tracking watt/kg change in the background of TrainerRoad right now. Next week we'll have a release that shows when you get a PR for watt/kg. That should help with this challenge.
