Subject: HR zone training test...a little worried about HR

I made a post similar to this a few months ago after doing my first field test  but am now a bit worried after looking around and seeing other people's HR zones on this site.

I am training for my first IM in Sept. and am using the HR zones in my training plan. This is the second time I have done the HR test. The first time my average over the final 20 minutes was 196 and I averaged like 6:50 per mile. This time it was 195 and I averaged 6:37 per mile. Also, I did a 10k through about a foot of snow in Jan. My average HR for the race was 195 and my max was all the way up at like 215, my time was terrible due to running the whole race through like 6 inches of snow. When I am doing nothing and put the HR monitor on, my HR is around 60, which I think is pretty normal. I know the results are correct and consistant but I have looked at many other people's HR's on here and mine seems to be pretty high. Is this any cause for concern?

No. Everyone is going to have different HR's at a various intensities. In general they will drop as you age but there is nothing odd about your observations and HR and you should never compare HR's between people, it's genetic and high or low doesn't matter. What matters is the amount of work your body can produce within it's own HR zones.

I feel like my HR goes higher than a lot of other people's too.  But I do think it is somewhat genetic and I have also heard that it's not really how high your HR gets, it's more about how quickly you can recover.  So your HR may go high when you are working, but when you slow down your HR drops down quickly too.  The good thing about working hard is I seem to burn way more calories in an hour than my friends doing the same/similar workouts! = )

Consider yourself lucky IMO. VO2 Max is limited by your Max HR...they both top out together. I can't get mine above 160 no matter how hard I work.

That being said, there is no direct correlation between HR & speed. But as an individual, your Range of 60 to 215 is pretty impressive, and if you have a normal sized heart (ie you're not a 90 lb woman), that heart beating at 215 is going to be pumping a ton of oxygen to your muscles. As long as they can use it, you're golden.

This is all assuming that it's a normal response to exercise and not a dysrythmia. If it were a dysrythmia, you'd probably have other symptoms like chest pain, trouble breathing, light headedness, chest pounding, palpitations

I usually average 190-192 on my 30 min LT test runs.  I averaged 175 on a marathon a few months ago.  My bike LT test is usally in the mid 180's for a 30 min test.

My heart rate is in that range and I'm still alive.  I have had my heart tested for other reasons, and no arrhythmias or anything.  One thing to pay attention to is that many triathletes are in older age groups, and your heart rate tends to slow as you get older.  So if you're in a younger age group than it may seem like HRs that people are posting are low,  but yours can be completely normal for your age.

Mine runs a bit higher that a lot of my riding buddies, and it use to be even HIGHER when I was younger.  I can bike comfortably in the 160's-170's all day, while my riding buddies redline at that.  Everyone is different.
