Like others I'm assuming since you said "varsity" you are 16-18 years old. If that's the case then I would suggest just doing what makes you the happiest. If that's trying to "bulk" up for football then do that and don't worry about what that does to your Tri performance. If Tri's are more important to you and you want to maximize your performance then bulking up is not the way to go. Stay as lean as possible and let the football performance be what it is.

You are so young, just have fun and do what makes you happy. I know that sounds so sappy but take it from someone much older, you don't get the teen years back.

Don't use wrist straps for back workouts. If you can't grip the weight then take some off and then work on your forearms.

I disagree.  I think you should work on your grip strength but it shouldn't hinder your gains.  For instance I deadlift with straps only after my grip is failing after the first 3 sets or so.  I deadlift at the end of my back routine so my grip is fried from all the pullups and rows.  I know the whole no straps thing is macho but it will limit your other goals.  I'm assuming the OP wants to be more than just Popeye forearms.

synthetic - 2012-03-28 12:44 PM Becareful of intramusclular fat - It can make your muscles LOOK bigger and you might feel stronger since there is less distance for the weights to travel....- but detrimental to cardio performance and is not real strength. Diet is key here, and patience - real muscle can only be grown at a rate of 1-3 lb a year; people who say they have more either gained water weight or fat

He's a teenager so his testosterone is almost at it's peak.  It's possible to gain more at that stage with proper diet and lifting.

lots of broscience in this thread

x2 on all the advice that these sports are mutually counterproductive, but as stated if you want to do both, make compromises.
