Subject: No Solid/Disc Wheels allowed in HIM??

The Honu 1/2 IM does not allow disc wheels or wheels covers, is this something new?

Here is the actual verbage in the athletes guide.

Bike - Rules & Regulations

2) No tandems, recumbents, fairings, solid/disc wheels, wheel covers or any add-on device designed exclusively to reduce resistance are allowed.

The full paragrapg is on page 9.

Given that archaic logic, I guess that also means no wetsuits, aero helmets or form-fitting clothing. You'll have to wear baggy board shorts for the swim, a football helmet on the bike and a nice heavy cotton t-shirt on the run. Without knowing anything more than you've posted here, it seems utterly ridiculous to me!

Hawaii Ironman doesn't allow them either. It's due to the winds. Don't know about the other stuff though. You might think that would include things like aero-bars and the like. But I seriously doubt that. what they're most likely talking about is fairings added to a bike that aren't there as a structural member of the bike.

Crosswinds on the Queen K can be dangerous, that's the reason discs or rear wheel covers are not allowed in Kona (either Honu or the WTC).

That makes sense, but if that's the real reason, they should specify that specifically instead of banning items designed to "reduce drag".

Nice alliteration there.
