NMTrier.....I too had Garmin issues and did not get a distance for the run. However, I did get one for the bike: 13.15 miles- a bit shorter than 25K. Was it the same last year? I noticed that the winning time this year was also way faster than last year. I guess this could be due to the lack of wind or just that Bobby Gonzales is a very fast SOB.

Sounds like you had a great race! Congrats on 7th overall!

Oh, if you dislike T2 there, you're gonna REALLY love T2 at the Elephantman you've got scheduled

Congrats on a great race!

Interesting that they would decide not to chip this year.  I hope Tri Sport chips their other races this year.  I plan to do Warrior and maybe Nutcracker.

Interesting. I thought the bike seemed shorter than 25k too. My cyclocomputer also got the distance at right around 13.2mi, but it hasn't been working right recently so I wasn't going to trust it. All the info/maps at TrisportCoaching says it was a 25k, but I think they gypped us out of 5k! And you're right the times this year were wayyy faster than last year.... about 5k on the bike faster.....

Thank you! It was only my second time cracking the top ten so I was quite happy with the results!

I have seen the T2 at Elephantman, and that is another one that could be improved. But at least at Elephantman everyone realizes that there is a steep downhill to the entrance, at MVT it kind of sneaks up on you....

I asked Mark at trisport coaching about the lack of chip timing at MV.  The following is an excerpt from his response:

After promoting races with chip timing for several years and personally racing two world championships that do not use chips anymore - we have decided to time our smaller races as MVT and SF tri (200 or so) manually electronic timing has become too costly for the results we get -most importantly  we get better, faster and more accurate results from manual timing. (No one is ever missing).  As Xterra Worlds Race Director Dave quoted to us in the pre-race meeting in October getting 95% of all athlete results with chips is 100% wrong.

In our first complete w/split manual we did Nutcracker in December and missed not a  single person's finish time, there are some missed splits but compared to our chip results with all three companies we have used - much faster and less misses especially overall.  At MVT this year we had times posted 4 minutes after the first finisher and had not one single mistake on the overall. Results were online 2 hours after the last finsher crossed the line & could have been sooner but we had to clean up the race course first!

Unfortunately our volunteer group for MVT backed out last minute (the night before the race) so we had to use our timing crew to man the course, this was unexpected. Typically we will be doing splits at all our races.

I get it, but that's lame in my opinion. The chips/straps wouldn't have not shown up on race day, for one thing.

I had actually asked Mark about the lack of chips as well, right before the race started, and got the same response. I think it is awesome that they can get faster and more complete results using a cheaper system. My primary concern was the lack of splits for each leg, however in your excerpt he says that in subsequent races there will be splits, which is awesome.

I don't doubt that they can do it just as well w/o chips. For nostalgic reasons I've kept results from the 90's- most had splits and none used chips. I believe they would have had splits had volunteers not bagged at the last minute.
