In semi-related news, I had PBS on last night, and Masterpiece was showing a miniseries called Birdsong.  Starring Richard Madden.  aka Robb Stark.  Thought that was funny.

Not sure if I missed something or not but did he have the one girl ultimately kill the other one or just torture her?

I was under the impression that the one killed the other or he would crossbow her.   As if we didn't know Joffrey was a sadistic punk already.

Right.  In the book he goes around shooting kittens with his crossbow.  This was just a way to show what a jack wagon he is.

I think I may be knit picking, but when Arya is at Harrenhal, is it suppose to be Roose Bolton the leader not Twynn Lannister?

I do like the Jaqen  H"ghar character ,  but if I hadn't read the books,  I would have no idea what he is saying to Arya.  

I thought Tyrion found out about the secret of the liquid fire.  Not Cersei.    Again I might be mistaken and knit picking....   Feel like I need to reread the books.        or check the Wiki link

I actually like most of the changes they have done, it keeps you on your toes if you have read your books and makes the series a little bit less predictable.  They have made Lord Tywin somewhat likable compared to the books, even if I suspect that may be about to change.

I think the books did have a few lines of Tywin being fair. Not that he was a good guy but it showed he was a normal man of power.

I didn't read the books but HBO did a mini series for it and it was really good.

I read Pillars of the Earth about a million years ago. I enjoyed it, but not sure it was in quite the same genre, Martin and Follett are very different authors.

Have you tried Robert Jordan and 'The Wheel of Time'  First book was published in 1990, with the last book due out in January 2013, however...

First 6 books are great

next 5 books are slow 

and the last 3 books were written by somebody else as Jordan died in 2007 and they had to go off his notes that he had planned for the last book (which was expanded into 3)

originally supposed to be 6 books, then expanded to 12, then 14 (and a prologue added as well) and its at 7 is when you really can tell he goes off on a tangent and writes basically about nothing other than to expand his universe (very GRRM)  Basically the story and characters got out of his control.

Side note:  I met my wife because of this series.  We were working together but didnt know each other that well until she saw me reading book 6 as she was reading book 7.  It was enough to get the conversation started.

Funny this thread should pop back up...  I was just thinking las night while watching the last episode (DVR), that it's getting REALLY good again...  I was getting worried, becuase the first 2-3 episodes of this second season seemed a bit slow and cumbersom with the introduction of so many new characters...

Oh, and the relationship between the Stark girl and the man she saved from the cages...  Best ever.  He rocks..., in a murderous kind of way.

I purchased the Blu-ray set without having seen it, and consider it one of the best video purchases I've made.  Totally worth it.  Pick up the books, too, if you like to read.

The 4th and 5th book are of the same time line but they were way too big to keep as one book so they split it up. So really they should be just one season but it seems like they would have to cut the books in half to get the full story.

The last couple of episodes seem to be deviating from the books so much that maybe they are moving to an "inspired by GRRM" model. Then they'll be free to go as many seasons as the feel like. Ok, maybe that is is a little snarky. I'm still really liking the series, but they are really playing fast and loose with the story line this season.

Ya, I can't say if I like it yet or not just because the books were so damn good.
