but only do the swim and bike?

i've got a niggly injury which is severely restricting my running and although i am gonna brave it through my super sprint (2.5k run) i am sort of half committed to a sprint tri a few weeks later but there's no chance i could run the 5k required. a mate at swimming has deliberately done a few tri's but no run.

i'm kinda tempted to get race experience or is just daft?

confused saph xx

If you feel doing the run can aggravate your injury and wish to accumulate more race and T1 experience I don't see why you shouldn't. 2 thirds of a race is better than none in my opinion.

Go for it. It's not daft, it actually just shows me that you are smart enough not to risk injuring yourself further.

Good luck with the race and hope you get can get back to running soon.

Any reason you couldn't walk the 5K piece?

If I was you, I would do the swim and bike, nothing wrong with that.

I say go for it with only the swim and bike. Your will probably feel really good and the competitive drive will kick in at the end of the bike and you will want to finish, in that case walk the run course.

The USAT has been sanctioning "Aquabike" races which are exactly this, so you only sign up for the swim and the bike, no run necessary.

Doesn't matter what anybody would do. What would you do? For the record, since you asked, yeah I would.

Like RgrBill says, what would you do?

Me, I wouldn't spend money on a race that I didn't plan to complete.

Why not do it in a team,  just do the first two legs yourself instead of having a third team member.

i did that earlier this year for an olympic distance as I had a few injuries that prevented me running 10ks.

Well, I wouldn't do it. Maybe this is because I'm poor, but a person can swim and bike on his own in a workout. If you won't finish the tri, why sign up? Swimming and biking back-to-back is relatively easy, and race support isn't necessary to accomplish that. You might get swim experience or bike experience, but you won't get good RACE experience if you only do part of the race.

I don't necessarily think there'd anything wrong with it as long as the race wasn't sold out and you would be taking the place of someone who wanted to do the whole race.

Also remember that you're supposed to notify a race official if you drop out - it's a both a safety and courtesy thing so they aren't out searching for you on the run course if you quit after the bike.

I think the relay idea is a good one.  I've seen a lot of two person teams at races.

Good luck,

Mark

thanks for the advice. i am very tempted to sign up for two races and just aqaubike them. as to why i wouldn't walk i'd be too tempted run. as i have never done a tri before and will be doing a super sprint as my first the experience would be great i won't need my wetsuit for my first tri so t1 practice would be invaluable. also i am hoping to do both these races next year as the full race so course practice would be ideal

i do agree that i wouldn't want to take the place of anybody who would want to do the full thing and maybe it is a bit fo a waste of money but i think these cons are far outweighed by the pros

thanks all.

I would walk it. I figured that what I would have to do for my first tri anyhow. We do have a member of the Master swim club that does number of tris, without running. He just stops after then bike.

Interesting that you should ask this as this was my exact dilemma last weekend - the only difference is that I had signed up for the race months ago. I decided to participate at the race on Saturday and told myself it was ok to stop at any time because it was better to do what I could within my limitations than to 1 - not do anything and 2 - risk injury further that would keep me out for the season. The swim and bike went great. I walked the run and jogged in the finishers shot. It was funny because the volunteers were yelling encouragingly you are almost there, push it. Little did they know

Anyhow...go, participate. Just accept that your time will be slower than normal. Its ok. I enjoyed the walk and talked with others who were struggling and instead took it upon myself to try to encourage others on the course. It was fun.
